📖 New Book Release!🎉💃🏼
‘This Isn’t the Story I Wanted’

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Thank you to @kregelbooks for the blessing of getting to read their books!

I'm looking forward to reading This Isn't the Story I Wanted by @_nicolelangman, a Canadian author (and whose book signing I just missed by a day at @houseofjamesbooksandcoffee!).

And, I absolutely loved An Accusing at the Old Bailey by @ericavetsch, as it was such a brilliant conclusion to the Of Cloaks and Daggers series. (Check out my collection of her books on the shelf!)

I'm grateful for Christian publishers who provide edifying resources and stories to readers, and I'm overjoyed that I can read their books ❤️

What do you do when the story you’re living looks nothing like the one you prayed for? 💔

There is a kind of grief we don’t talk about enough. The grief of what could have been. The dreams that didn’t unfold the way we imagined. The life we thought we were stepping into.

And for foster and adoptive parents, this grief can be especially complicated.

We can love our children deeply, be grateful for the calling God has placed on our lives, and STILL grieve the unexpected losses and challenges along the way.

Grief and gratitude can coexist. And acknowledging what hurts doesn’t mean we’ve stopped trusting God.

This week on Called to Love, I’m joined by author, licensed therapist, and social worker @_nicolelangman for a powerful conversation about grieving the story we didn’t want while learning to trust the God who stays.

We’re talking about the grief that often goes unrecognized, how to process loss without getting stuck in it, and how to help our children navigate their own grief with compassion and hope.

Because sometimes faith doesn’t look like having all the answers. Sometimes it looks like trusting that God is still good when the story is nothing like we expected.

I loved this interview with Nicole Langman, author of This Isn’t the Story I Wanted on Episode 358 of the Sparking Wholeness podcast.

We discuss the losses we rarely name as grief, the “casserole code” and why some losses get community support while others don’t, the loss of stress resilience in perimenopause, shame and the comparison game, spiritual bypassing versus genuine faith-filled support, the difference between over-identifying with a wound and minimizing it, and practical tools for processing grief in the middle of an ordinary day.

You’ll also learn why naming a loss out loud is the first courageous step toward healing it, how blood sugar and protein intake directly affect your capacity to process grief, and two simple physical tools (a grounding scent and a floor-to-standing movement) that calm the amygdala in real time.

Don’t miss this episode! Find wherever you get podcasts!

On Episode 358 of the Sparking Wholeness podcast, I sat down with Nicole Langman, therapist and author of the book, “This Isn’t the Story I Wanted.”

We had such an in depth conversation about loss! She said something I haven’t stopped thinking about: the shoulds keep shame alive.

We should ourselves to death. I should be over this by now. I should be handling this better. I shouldn’t even be struggling with this.

Nicole put words to something I live out myself, especially when shame creeps in around my own story: shame thrives in isolation, and the moment we name what we’re actually feeling instead of what we think we’re allowed to feel, it starts to lose its grip.

If you’ve been should-ing yourself all week, this episode is for you. Full conversation is live now, wherever you get podcasts!

Grief affects all of us at one time or another and this book is a great tool for dealing with it. I will chew on this one for awhile and will be coming back to it again. Easy to read and lots of wisdom.

If you’ve ever grieved something that nobody else seemed to notice, comment a 💛.

I see you. I understand. I know what that’s like.

The lack of support & silence after her divorce was loud. In today’s episode, my friend, speaker, author and therapist @_nicolelangman shares about her experience rebuilding her life after an unwanted divorce.

“What I needed wasn’t a perfect fix,” she says.
“I needed someone to say, ‘This is heartbreaking.’”

“I needed people to show up without making me ask.”

“I needed presence more than advice.”

We know how to bring casseroles when someone dies. But what about the griefs that don’t come with a funeral?

Divorce. Estrangement. Infertility. Diagnosis.
Broken dreams.

Those losses matter too.

Maybe the most loving thing we can do is stop trying to explain pain away and just sit in it with someone.

This might not be the story you wanted.
But it is the one God wants to meet you in.

Nicole‘s new book is out now!

I loved celebrating my friend Nicole’s book launch on Friday night.

The House of James was packed with people who came to hear Nicole share about her latest book written for those grieving loss in its many forms.

This Isn’t the Story I wanted: Grieving the Life You Lost and Trusting the God Who Stays is a wonderful book by an outstanding author.

And no, I’m not being biased.

Nicole has a beautiful way of putting words to the hard places we sometimes don’t know how to express, while also reminding us that even when our story isn’t what we wanted, God is still with us.

Congrats, Nicole. You’ve written an incredible book and I pray God will use it to bless many, many people.

I’m going to be very honest and say I almost gave up on this book. I started it a couple of times and something about it wasn’t working for me. I thought perhaps it was a book I would need to read later. Then I got some unexpected news and decided to give it one more try. Third time was definitely the charm.

To read that grief can be more than just related to death is something I knew on some level but boy did I need to see it. There is an aspect of grieving to
all of the hard things in life and even some of the good ones depending on circumstances.

One of the things I really like is the chapters are written in such a way that it’s easy to pick which ones you read first. They each address a aspect of grief and the process of working through it that makes it easy to skip around.

The author combines her training and experience as a counselor, stories of clients and her own stories, and biblical passages and characters to help illustrate the various things discussed in these pages.

I can see myself reading this again and taking the time to answer the questions at the end of chapter, journal with the prompts, and pull out my Bible to read the mentioned scriptures and the ones around them. This is a book that I can see being useful through the various seasons of life.

I’m so glad I picked this book up one more time!

Thank you to Kregel Publications for the copy of this book. All views are my own.
