Summer seems to be going fast, but I was reminded last weekend at dinner with friends that we hadn’t reached the halfway point. There are still many days and moments to soak in the long days, the bounty of summer vegetables and fruits, and to see the landscape teeming with life, even amidst the struggles we face.

Sake is one of the markers of moments for me, whether it is at a shop, travels in Japan to many a standing bar or tucked away izakaya, or just in a solemn moment at home with the trees and sky on my porch. I wanted to share some of these moments in that spirit and in support of @supportsake and #natsusake2026

While this Yonetsuru akai-kobo Namazake has just delighted me, I’ve found myself coming back to @amabukishuzo_official Banana flower yeast unpasteurized sake for its banana milkshake, custard, and savory banana bread vibes. Summer time makes me think of cookouts, and I’ve indulged a few times in pairing this sake with jerk spice wet wings. It’s a rad flavor blast, with the creamy texture of the sake complimenting the spice and giving it an extra kick of tropical fruit, sweetness, and umami that transports my palate and spirit to a beach barbecue.

In that spirit, it inspired a sake highball of ginger beer, banana flower sake, and lime peel. I like somewhere between a 5:3 to 6:4 ratio of ginger beer to sake on a few good sized ice cubes. It’s a treat, refreshing, with the ginger and banana have a chill hang together, adding some weight and creaminess on the palate to stand alongside the spice and kick of ginger.

Here’s a look at some of the sakes that jumped out as ripe for summer in my time in Portland and Japan. It has been a summer of sake as a way to connect, create, and explore. And we still have another half of it to enjoy! Cheers, friends. Kanpai!

Music + Beverages are two of my biggest passions.

Safe to say I was so stoked to see one of my favorite Portland bars @favoriteneighbors hosting sound salons for whole album listening sessions.

Join me WEDS JULY 15 8-10PM where I’ll be playing a couple of my favorite artists’ albums front to back on the vibrant sound system at DAYDREAM. Possibly another bonus favorite record from Spain or Japan time pending.

KING KRULE - 6 Feet Beneath the Moon: A modern classic and generational voice, Archy Marshall, performing as King Krule, debuted with his first full length LP at 19. Somehow, he already had a signature sound effortlessly blending jazz, alternative, hip hop, r&b, bossa with a raw, arresting voice somewhere between Billy Bragg and Joe Strummer.

THIN LIZZY - Thin Lizzy: The self-titled debut from the Dublin group, most famous for The Boys Are Back in Town. Before the classic dual lead guitar lineup, Thin Lizzy were a three piece, drawing on Irish folk, blues, psych rock, and spoken word. Phil Lynott, only 20 years old, was a strong lyricist, storyteller, and songwriter. Brian Downey is one of rock’s most underrated drummers, and Eric Bell’s guitar somehow blends the Irish and American blues sound

Bonus albums here are city pop classic Neuromantic by Yukihiro Takahashi and balearic beat pop dreamscape Subjza by Delorean.

Pro tip, there’s a tight, well curated by the glass sake list here on top of the amazing wine, vermouth, and low abv and NA cocktail selections.

Thank you DAYDREAM. See y’all soon 🙏🏻 by @_non_dualist

spent an hour on the mat with my dear one cole this morning via facetime. exploring groundedness & sidebody love, it was a beautiful & expansive practice. stretching me out in all the ways i needed most. direct, & explorative curing made space for me to find the practice i was looking for. no vinyasa, slow & intentional, a great way to start the day with a friend!

enjoyed a fabulous 75 minutes or so this morning online with my dear one, cole. it is such a wonderful thing to practice with other teachers… to be trusted as the guinea pig for new classes… not to mention it’s just plain fun to see & practice with friends, even if it’s online. little dharma talk at the beginning, a beautiful flow that both strengthens & lengthens, & a quick chat after. all in all, a lovely morning. also, please practice.

Grateful to continue guiding Friday Noon Hot Yoga at @atrium.pdx in SE Portland through the winter.

Come for some inspiration, perspiration, respiration, AND the connective word contained in all 3: spirit

AND perhaps stay for the Japanese psych and dub, shoegaze, dream pop, and ethereal metal tunes.

Howdy Portland! Join us @oelwineshop next Wednesday, 10/8/25 at 6:30 for Mystical to Modern: Saké is for Everyone — Tickets Link in Bio

Saké is the ancient, traditional beverage of Japan. You could say Japan in a glass. How on earth does it start as grains of rice and transform into an elegant, versatile, refreshing, and palate quenching brew? And, what the heck is Junmai, Koji, Daiginjo? Also, how do I even begin understanding what’s on the label and in the bottle? Maybe you only had hot saké and want to branch out or love wine but want to see what all the saké fuss is about. This class is great for those already into saké wanting to dive a little deeper and saké-curious, open-minded wine drinkers who know they love wine but are game for trying new things.

With mystical origins being made by monks, the saké available today is a very modern beverage yet still with ancient roots. Join us and guest educator, Cole Youngner (Certified Saké Advisor and WSET Saké 3 Certified) to demystify saké and see how Japan’s unique fermented beverage truly is for everyone. With dashes of history, brewing and production process, and, the super good part, tasting, Cole will guide you through a sakê crash course. Learn what makes saké unique among fermented drinks, its similarities and differences to wine, and four key styles from the Sake Service Institute of Japan to get started on your saké journey. Plus a few bonus sakés as we move into fall and holidays. Cheers, Kanpai! taken in Ora et Labora Wine Shop by @_non_dualist

POSE = REVOLVED HALF MOON

SANSKRIT ~ PARIVRTTA ARDHA CHANDRASANA

It’s okay if knees have a slight bend. Okay if top leg is not completely parallel to floor. Okay if hips aren’t perfectly squared.

Be in the sensation and presence of the pose with engagement of mind, body, heart, breath, the spirit of the pose, rather than overly focusing on what it looks like.

POSE = SUGARCANE

SANSKRIT ~ ARDHA CHANDRA CHAPASANA

A more literal translation might be: Half Moon Bow Pose. Per teachers Douglas Brooks (who offered the name for this pose, it is not necessarily a traditional pose name) and Amy Ippoliti, the Chapa refers to the goddess Lalita’s bow which was made from a sugarcane stalk.

Goal is not to lift your top leg and hip as high as possible and bend so far sideways that your fingers or hand touch the ground. I would offer its finding the unity in a possibly disorienting shape that blends a sense of inversion, standing balancing, back bend, heart opening, and hip opening and extension.

AND amidst all this complexity, can you find focus or softness, holding multiple things at the same time.

One final tip per my teacher @darrenrhodesyoga is to keep right hand under shoulder as you back bend, which may involve moving it out slightly the more you back bend.

POSE = HALF MOON

SANSKRIT ~ ARDHA CHANDRASANA

Standing balancing pose that is very expansive and exploration in length and space.

Goal is not lifted leg as high as possible or bottom hand touching floor. Instead, guides are: stability, stretch, and strength. Solid foundation for these = strong standing foot actively pressing down through left and right and all toe mounds + more weight into hand than you might expect so the standing leg isn’t doing all the work. The block helps you ground through bottom hand - also recommend turning your fingers of bottom hand out slightly about 30-45 degrees to broaden and stabilize bottom arm and shoulder which can help open and lift heart and chest and spine.

Other tenacious tendency I often notice is hand planted more inside foot and shorter than you might think to get hand directly under shoulder and thus shoulders stacked. This is a pose that can benefit from a practice partner or mirror to see where you tend to plant your bottom hand. I find a foot in front of your standing foot in line with outside edge of foot is a good starting point to calibrate from.

Resemblance shapes for sequencing: triangle, Supta or Utthita padhagusthasana 2, side plank with top leg lifted.

Looking down can be more doable for balance, looking out or up can be more challenging but assist with turning torso and stretching in all directions more.

POSE OF THE DAY = DANCING YOGI

SANSKRIT ~ NATARAJASANA

Be in the spirit and sensation of the pose rather than the aesthetic, should, supposed to look like of the pose. Lots of ways to make this shape. Explore the variations to meet the practice so that it can meet you and best serve and work for you here and now. BKS Iyengar was a great teacher and student, and the Light on Yoga is a great guide, but your body does not have to resemble his in the light on yoga to make this shape. As my teacher @darrenrhodesyoga taught me, modifications are a must rather than making yoga into a problem, so meet your body where it’s at to let the practice meet you and your body in the moment.
