POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
The layered history of the house continues into the courtyard, where existing structures, terraces and gardens come together in a new setting.

Part of the former stables became the entrance to the underground automated parking, while another was transformed into a private “grotto” — a roofless space open to the sky, leading to a hidden micro-garden. The stepped terrain inspired us to create a series of terraces connected by ramps, expanding the planted areas and shaping a labyrinth-like garden of lawns, hedges, shrubs and thuja.

The result combines a classical, almost palatial character with a contemporary, functional approach. White-and-green flowerbeds shift with the seasons, continuing the transformation of the residence.

Defined by layers of history, this building originated as 17th-century merchant chambers before growing upwards through 19th-century additions and later transformations into a residential complex.

NWDS carried out the reconstruction without trying to return the house to a single historical moment. The aim was to preserve the character it had acquired over centuries while carrying it into the present.

In this post, we share its history and the approach behind its conservation.

Curated visit to Aea x NWDS: Architecture and art in a daily setting 💙

We rarely think of architecture, hospitality, and art as part of the same experience. This session brings all three together — a curated visit to Aea Sapace, a cultural project by @aea.cultureinitiative inside @tims.lisboa, followed by a conversation with the team behind @_nwds_ and Aea Space.

We’ll talk about why hospitality and culture belong together, and how contemporary art shapes the way we think about everyday life.

@lobby.lisbon is taking shape in Lisbon’s historic Santos district — a hybrid lobby-bar project, behind the scenes.

The original spatial characteristics are restored: vaulted ceilings, proportions, structure. The space is built for functional flexibility, shifting with the demands of the day.

The story continues!

Tbilisian Courtyards are not relics — they are a living urban system. “Ezologia — Porous Body of Tbilisi” reads the Ezo through archives, fieldwork, GIS mapping, and speculative typologies, uncovering the spatial intelligence embedded in voids, thresholds, and shared ground.

On view through September 25 at the Tbilisi History Museum. taken in თბილისის ისტორიის მუზეუმი - ქარვასლა/Tbilisi History Museum - Karvasla by @_nwds_

Last Friday, the exhibition “Ezologia — Porous Body of Tbilisi” opened to the public. This marks the first phase of an interdisciplinary research project on Tbilisian Courtyard, initiated by @_nwds_ and @ubani.center.

The research was developed with @withnessing, @_studio2am, art historian Tatia Gvineria (@tatia_gvineria), architect Natalia Vasadze (@ticcofeo), sociologist Mariam Jibuti (@mjibuti) and other independent researchers.

The exhibition features analytical maps, architectural research, graphic studies, archival documents, and video materials that explore the role of the Tbilisian Courtyard typology in shaping the city’s urban fabric.

We would like to thank the project’s collaborators, participants, partners, supporters, and everyone who joined us at the opening.

On view through 25th September at @tbilisihistorymuseum_karvasla (Sioni St 8).
Opening hours: everyday (except Monday), 10:00-18:00

Designed by @_nwds_ TIMS café & padaria @tims.lisboa reinterpret the museum’s focus on communication through architecture, combining socialising around food and cultural programming within a single, flexible setting.

The interior unfolds as a compact square encircled by arches: a distinct rhythm across the room and defining a sequence of interconnected zones without closing them off. Mirrors repeat the arches, extending the perceived depth of the space and strengthening its dialogue with the museum.

An eight-metre counter runs along one side, integrating bakery production, coffee service, and display. Opposite, a raised platform functions as a shallow amphitheatre. This slightly elevated core is reserved for exhibitions, discussions, and other events within Aea Space, a cultural venue inside TIMS café & padaria curated by @aea.cultureinitiative

In Lisbon’s Santos district, a former port quarter that has gradually evolved into a landscape of studios, small galleries and independent restaurants, @_nwds_ has completed @tims.lisboa café & padaria and Aea Space for culture and art embedded within the Museu das Comunicações. The project occupies a ground-floor unit in the museum’s foundation building and extends the institution’s focus on communication into the everyday ritual of bread and coffee.

In the process of redesign, the space was returned to its masonry shell. Portions of the original stone flooring were uncovered and restored, retaining the marks of earlier arrangements. Material choices favour tactility over display. Existing brickwork is retained where possible; new surfaces are rendered in microcement.

The mixed-use Abastumani residence, combining apartments and retail space, will replace an old reinforced concrete structure so abandoned that a forest has taken root on its roof.

The overall visual concept echoes a defining feature of Abastumani’s local architecture: houses that appear to be fused from multiple parts. This idea is expressed through the building’s slightly asymmetrical layout and distinctive façades, where windows of varying modules form a collage-like grid. To seamlessly blend the structure into the town’s existing character, the façade design incorporates familiar materials reimagined in a contemporary way — wooden panels, stone-like bricks, and smooth stone.

The design reflects and reinforces this synchronisation. Balconies in every apartment open onto a picturesque view of the forest-covered cliff. And behind the building — just barely visible through the lobby’s panoramic windows — lies a private, tranquil backyard. taken in Abastumani by @_nwds_
