One Art Gallery presents INVICTUS

This exhibition is inspired by William Ernest Henley’s 1875 poem, Invictus:

Out of the night that covers me,
Black is the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

Featuring ten trailblazing artists who, through their distinct perspectives, explore a shared human experience, the determination to endure, overcome, and rise above adversity: 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙨, the Latin word for "unconquered."

“The most interesting thing about 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙨 is what it doesn’t promise. It doesn’t promise a life without suffering. It doesn’t promise that our hard work will always produce the outcome we want. It doesn’t promise that we will always win. Instead, it points to something more internal and powerful: the knowledge that, no matter the situation, our sense of self, dignity, and agency can never be compromised, especially when circumstances become difficult.” — The Curator @mrwaduud

As the month of July ends, we take a look back at the Reflection exhibition at the Gallery earlier in the month.

The Reflection show featured works by seven prolific Nigerian artists, namely Hycenth David, Oluwapelumi Fagbemi, Darlington Raymond, Moses Oyeleye, Wisdom Madunacho, Samuel Joseph, and Christopher Ohia. The exhibition provided space and moments for introspection and reflection, whether it's an internal exploration or set within wider cultural or social contexts.

Thank you to the artists, and to everyone who came to see the show during the opening and closing receptions and all the days in between. Thank you for staying long enough to reflect with us, and sit with the works till they spoke to you. Glad to have welcomed you! by @_oneartgallery

This is a thank-you message from the bottom of my heart.

To everyone who attended Resonance: 15 Truths, thank you. You made this exhibition an incredibly fulfilling experience for me. The way you showed up, engaged with the work, and continued to visit the gallery long after the opening day meant more to me than I can put in words

To @_OneArtGallery, thank you for trusting me giving me the space to share the vision. Especially the team, you guys! Thank you for putting in the work Olamide & Queen, you did everything necessary to pull off an unforgettable exhibition right here on the mainland.

To all our collectors, new and seasoned, we are deeply grateful. Thank you for your support, for reaching out, for acquiring works, and for making this journey worthwhile for your chosen artists and everyone involved.

To all artists, you indulged me, some even within a very short notice, thank you. Thank you for trusting me with your stories, your work, and your vision. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of presenting your work and helping share those stories with the world in a meaningful way.

And a big shout-out to @IgnitePaint for showing up for us in a major way. Thank you for providing the paints that helped elevate the space and transform it into the colourful, immersive experience that welcomed our visitors throughout the exhibition. Your support helped bring the vision to life, and I am deeply grateful.

Resonance may have come to a close, but this is only the beginning. The Gallery has so much more in store, and I am excited for what lies ahead. I’m sure I’ll be back again, whether as a guest curator, collaborator, or simply a supporter of great art.

But for now, it’s time to return to the studio. by @_oneartgallery

Resonance: 15 Truths: Jude Adebayo

Title: On My Own Terms III
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size: 23 x 25 inches
Year: 2026

On My Own Terms III is from a three-part series exploring what it means to exist in a body where choices are often questioned or denied. The work sits in quiet tension, where stillness becomes a form of control rather than absence.

Adebayo Jude is drawn to the moments where dignity is gathered and presence is reclaimed without spectacle.

This painting, for Jude, depicts. not victimhood, but a quiet resistance. Jude Adebayo created this, from his ongoing body of work, to hold space for voices that are often silenced.

Currently showing at One Art Gallery.
Time: 11 AM - 5 PM (Monday - Friday)
Exhibition runs till May 30, 2026
Address: 2/5, Idowu Ajao Street, Ajao Estate, Anthony Village, Lagos. by @_oneartgallery

Resonance: 15 Truths: Lekan Olaosebikan

Title: INHERITANCE
Medium: Oil paint on canvas
Size: 27 x 2733.5 inches
Year: 2026

Lekan Olaosebikan is a Lagos-based Nigerian artist working primarily with oil on canvas. His current exploration centres on EDA, a character and life source depicted as leaf figures that embody human presence and speak perceptively through their own worlds and experiences.

Through EDA, Lekan explores the emotional, social, and psychological realities of African life. EDA allows him to examine hardship, endurance, identity, and survival through symbolism. These figures carry human experiences without losing tenderness or dignity.

Lekan Olaosebikan's work reflects on African society, its struggles, strengths, contradictions, and hope. He wants viewers to see themselves in these forms, to recognise shared stories, and to leave with reflection, resilience, and possibility.

Currently showing at One Art Gallery.
Time: 11 AM - 5 PM (Monday - Friday)
Exhibition runs till May 30, 2026
