I get to live my dreams every day, but 17 years later, I get to live a very special dream. Angles Crest, twisty roads in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu Canyon to search for Ferrari and more amazing roads. It’s been a long time since I’ve sat at my desk to write, and I don’t want to waste time writing about why this encampment is here. I do, however, want to write about what this encampment means. These kids, and I say kids with upmost respect, are experimenting and creating. They are trying to create the kind of world that they want to live in. They are experimenting with self-governance, communal love, and meaningful education. At camp, there is a solidified list of demands and of daily activities. Live music and dancing and teach-ins. They are educating themselves by reading books and speaking with elders, and educating in a way that doesn’t involve arbitrary grading or testing. No letter grades, no pass or fail. There is an abundance of free food, and micro communities ate and talked, and read from the Refaat Alareer memorial library. When Muslim protestors are called to pray, the other protestors form a human wall so that they will not be filmed or photographed. These kids have taken the chaos, rage, and hurt of organizing in 2020, and gently molded it into something different; substantial and self-sustaining. It genuinely felt good to be here after being away from social movements on the ground for so long, and the encampment spilling from the quad into the street is proof of that. They harbor real risk and real stakes, whether that be trying to finish school, find their first job out of school, or keep their first job out of school. They are in some way, trying to deal away with those pressures, and create a real community where everyone has legitimate value independent of the capitalistic state. They are organized and meticulous, and as of day five, camp is still going strong. They are trying, and trying, and trying again.
