Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori

As tanga tiriti, witnessing the current attempts to erase the language and culture that allowed my tipuna to exist on this land in the first place, is quite frankly disgusting.
The solutions lie within te ao Māori.
Always have,
always will
Ake ake ake

But I am enlivened, reinvigorated, and given so much hope whenever I dip my hand into kaupapa around the motu. To see so many amazing people coming together to solve the problems and challenge the narratives created by colonisation and perpetuated by the governmental structures put into place for this very purpose, it gives me hope

This mahi is so much bigger than any one individual, and is made immeasurably more achievable when we come together and collaborate. As the GOAT @che_fu told us “Many hands make light work”

If you or anyone you know is doing the mahi, I know sometimes it feels like an impossible mountain to climb. At every step we are being beaten down by those in power, and often it feels like these kōrero fall on deaf ears.

But we have the power when we work together
We have the power
We have the power

Food Rescue In Action

Shout out @sundayblessingsakl making sure our whanau is supported since aaaages ago

This mahi runs deeper than any video can show, but this is just a snippet of the work that goes on behind the scenes, making sure quality kai gets to those who need it. It inspires me so much to know people who don’t make excuses, who instead make waves and make solutions

Always so stoked to be able to support this kaupapa in my home town, the beautiful CA

Support your local

The Mahi Doesn’t Matter

To be clear, the measurable outcomes of the mahi are great, getting kids into housing is important and we should not live in a world where these things are even a reality, let alone something we have to fight for to be fixed.

But none of it is achievable without the intangible, immeasurable things like love, empathy, manaakitanga. Things that cannot be seen are often overlooked as unimportant, however what all of us who do this mahi day in day out understand, is that it all starts with connection. That is what our rangatahi are telling us, loud and clear, is the most important thing

Connection, relationships and community transcend any individual or organisation. That is the only way to effect real, long lasting and meaningful change. taken in Grey Lynn by @_polargram

Moral of this story, never accept for yourself what you wouldn’t accept for others. It’s not easy and not always possible immediately, but working towards this should always be important

Never be afraid to move, change, grow. And never let people treat you badly

I know every situation is different, everyone’s pressures are different, but standing on your morals is always important

Top 5 Hacks for a successful BBQ this summer

Hack one: fresh produce

Either grow your own, hit your local markets, or make friends with a greenthumbed neighbour 🔥🔥

Hack Two: Figure out the cooking order

Figure out which things take the longest so you can have everything ready at the same time

Hack three: Fry the scraps

Things like Leek Heads hold a lot of flavour and goodness and can be repurposed into other dishes. I like to fry a big pot up while I’m bbqing that adds another layer to the table

Hack four: Oil & Salt

Flavour is key, oil and salt give you what you need. You can add other flavours as you like, but salt and oil bring out the best of veges and meat 🔥

Hack Five: Pay Attention

Too easy to get distracted while cooking, and easy to burn stuff on the grill. Pay attention to how things are cooking and if you need to, flip them again and again

Bonus tips:

Share your kai with whoever you can
