Close to Home brings together artists from the South Florida community whose creative source is their private world and the emotional ties that most intimately define them. The exhibition concept emerged from a growing recognition of artists in the region presenting work that depicted or functioned as an homage to those closest to them: fellow artists, romantic partners, chosen family, kin, ancestral lineage, and loved ones who have passed.

The exhibition considers how in this moment, artists grappling with questions of subject matter and meaning in their work, have increasingly turned toward the central importance of relationships—recognizing how supportive, collaborative, memorial, and transformative bonds can serve as catalysts for vital creative expression.

In South Florida – a place defined by cultural convergence – artists are propelled by inclusionary networks of mutual encouragement, in which the close nature of the creative community fosters an environment for dialogue and support.

The presentation includes a variety of approaches, from direct portraiture to allegorical depictions, and a range of material forms, from textiles to activated sculpture. The exhibition also brings together multiple generations of artists, underscoring the enduring nature of intimacy as a creative force. Close to Home affirms that the artmaking process does not take place in isolation, but inevitably drawn from shared experience, and serves to remind us that vulnerability is a conduit to empathy.

“Distributed in October 2025 at a Sunday service hosted by Commissioner at the former location of Rainbow Village, Reginald O’Neal’s print editions were gifted to dozens of families displaced by the redevelopment, community members who formerly lived in the housing, as well as those who had paid into Commissioner’s 2025 collecting pool. The work asks each recipient to take an active role in stewarding the history of [the Rainbow Village, Overtown] housing blocks within the personal museums of their homes, wherever those walls now happen to stand.”
— Frances Dunbar Archer for @burnaway

Thank you, @saintfrancess, for sharing our story with such care. This shared work has been a durational labor of love for each other and of home—wherever that may be.

Big love to @isamxrie, editor with Burnaway; and to @gesischilling for capturing our reveal with such tenderness and joy. Grateful to O’Neal and for everyone who made Remembering Rainbow Village come to life on that dreamy Sunday afternoon in Overtown.

“The Performance” (2022-2025)

Curatorial Statement:
The paintings and large-scale sculpture in this exhibition are from Reginald O’Neal’s acclaimed Jazz Figurines series. First exhibited at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2022, the series has continued to evolve and is presented here in its first comprehensive museum exhibition.

O’Neal first encountered a set of these ceramic figurines depicting jazz musicians while visiting a gift shop in New Orleans. Made in the mid-20th century, the figures’ bright red jackets and white pants reflect historical uniforms of servitude. Their soulless, blank expressions and silently raised instruments prompted O’Neal to connect the representational and performative intentions of the trinkets with, more broadly, the commodification and exploitation of Blackness, across art, music, spirituality and knowledge.

Light, composition, tone and scale render these diminutive figurines with dramatic expression, imbuing them with unsettling complexities while demonstrating his virtuosic talents as a painter.

O’Neal is a third-generation resident of Overtown, a historically Black neighborhood in Miami with a rich musical history. During segregation, it provided enthusiastic audiences and welcoming accommodations for world-class Black musicians who were barred from staying in hotels in the Miami neighborhoods where they performed. After their concerts, musicians such as Count Basie, Nina Simone and Ray Charles were known to travel across the Miami Beach causeway to perform after-hours shows in Overtown.

O’Neal has also created significant works of sculpture as part of the Jazz Figurines series. Included in this exhibition is O’Neal’s monumental sculpture The Saxophonist (2023).

Closing TODAY! — Spinello’s 20th Anniversary Exhibition - Changes: Reflections on Time & Space

Changes: Reflections on Time & Space gathers fifteen artists whose practices have intersected with the gallery’s history. Drawing from founder Anthony Spinello’s personal art collection, the exhibition stages a dialogue between seminal works collected over the past two decades and new or recent works by the same artists-many of whom share deep ties to Miami.
This constellation of artworks maps not only Spinello’s own trajectory, but also a chapter in the city’s evolving cultural landscape, reflecting the intertwined histories of place, practice, and community. Here, time is both a subject and a medium. The works span years, even decades, and carry with them the histories of their making-the social, political, and personal contexts that shaped them.

It is an honor to feature Reginald O’Neal in SUNS & SHADOWS.

Opening November 14 @ahcacmiami
Marshall L. Davis Sr. African Heritage Cultural Arts Center
Curated by @roscoebthicke

Born and raised in Overtown, Miami, Reginald’s work reflects the people and places that shaped him, capturing moments of tenderness, struggle, and endurance within life. His paintings are meditations on everyday life, transforming memory into form and reflection into legacy.

A self-taught artist, Reginald’s practice bridges fine art and lived experience, drawing inspiration from his community and surroundings. His work has been exhibited at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), Spinello Projects, MOCA North Miami, and Rubell Museum. His portraits and scenes speak to both personal and collective histories, revealing the quiet power of presence.

Reginald’s work reminds us that memory is not just something we hold, but something that continues to hold us.
