We are thrilled to announce our forthcoming exhibition “A landscape longed for: The garden as disturbance” curated by Laura Novoa (@laudsn) and Adler Guerrier (@adlerguerrier). The exhibition, which opens to the public on Friday, March 1 at 5pm, features work by 15 artists, each of whom explores the motif of the garden in its relation to the cultivation and expression of beauty and knowledge.

Each of the participating artists, including Laura Castro, Carolina Casusol, Sandi Haber Fifield, David Hartt, Jim Hodges, Mark Fleuridor, Candice Lin, Cathy Lu, Lee Mary Manning, Ana Mendieta, Reginald O’Neal, Ebony Patterson, Ema Ri, Onajide Shabaka and Kandis Williams, consider the intricacies of the garden as a metaphor for the larger world, using it as a framework to consider cultural, social, political, geographical, and historical issues.

“A landscape longed for: The garden as disturbance” builds on the exhibit’s first iteration, showcased at Locust Projects in Miami in 2021. There, works were displayed with dialogues addressing notions of fragility, remembrance, ornamentation, beauty, and affective traces in the landscape. At CEAM, the show’s themes extend to ecological interdependence, homage, reverence, refuge, renewal, and time emphatically spent on the creation and nourishment of our inner lives.

Laura Novoa is a curator and arts administrator based in Miami, FL, where she works as Assistant Director of Programs and Community Engagement at the Bakehouse Art Complex. She has curated exhibitions for the Miami Design District, Locust Projects, Oolite Arts, and YoungArts, among others. Adler Guerrier is an artist based in Miami who has presented his works in exhibitions at the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, Orlando Museum of Art, Pérez Art Museum Miami, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, and CEAM.

In his poignant oil paintings, Reginald O’Neal (b. Miami, 1992) interprets scenes from his personal experiences growing up in the public housing projects of Overtown, a historically significant Black neighborhood in Miami. Employing soft brushstrokes, deep shadows, and a subdued color palette, O’Neal probes history and memory and the complexities of the Black experience.

O’Neal’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States, and is held in the permanent collections of the Pérez Art Museum Miami, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, and the Rubell Museum. O’Neal is a recipient of the South Florida Cultural Consortium in 2019, and was nominated for the Florida Prize in Contemporary Art in 2023. He has participated in residencies in Spain, Japan, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and Bed Stuy Residency.

I had the honor of curating @_kinyobi_’s solo show, which opened a year ago today. Looking back, I think about all that we wanted and needed to express through this exhibition, how the notion of “good times” became a conduit for trying to reach a larger and more nuanced understanding of ourselves and our world.

I feel that this excerpt from Ocean Vuong’s “On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous” aptly captures our sentiments:

“…being knocked down was already understood, already a given, it was the skin you wore. To ask “What’s Good?” was to move, right away, to joy. It was pushing aside what was inevitable to reach the exceptional. Not great or well or wonderful, but simply good. Because good was more often enough, was a precious spark we sought and harvested of and for one another.”

To more moments of celebration, community, joy, and love like the one we had during the exhibition’s closing reception, The Benediction. A huge and unending thank you to all the artists, musicians, and creatives that generously shared their artistry with us that evening.

At Artillery Residency, the artists explore various forms of media such as Painting, Sculpture, Installation, Drawing, Murals, and Film.
The artists conducted extensive research and produced exceptional work on some of the most pressing issues of our time, including Immigration, Environmental Issues, Social Justice, Dreams, Memories, and Identities. Their creations were a testament to their talent, creativity, and unwavering commitment to making a difference in the world.
