POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Today I offered public comment against Utah HB 174, a bill to ban gender affirming care for youth. Such care was already "paused" by a previous bill and the legislature commissioned a study on gender affirming care. That study overwhelmingly demonstrated the safety and necessity of such care. The house speaker is virulently transphobic, so the report is being completely dismissed.

This legislative committee invited a handful of fringe talking heads—including a famous detransitioner who makes a living flying to various states to testify inaccurately against trans people—to dominate the committee time, while offering others like myself 90 seconds to make a comment.

I loved hearing from everyone who opposed the bill. Especially the trans youth and adults who poured their hearts out. But since I already know our Republican supermajority will pass the bill, instead of trying to debunk the countless ignorant claims their hand-selected witnesses presented, I decided to make them a promise. We will fight until we win.

With gratitude for @theresathorn @jessethornveryfamous @abimaxwelloneday and other parents of trans kids who've inspired me, who feel the rage, and who give me hope.

With love for @kylelukoffwrites, @laurieleehall, @pseudo.bro, @young.eris, @earthtokb, @queernewsdaily, @katelynburnswrites, @ashrowans, @kitkat2022ktc, @transembodypod, and all the other trans folks who have helped me learn and change. My life is better for knowing you and I'll always stand with you.

Cultivate Being is a documentary-style audio memoir about life going on in the shadow of loss. Hosted by storyteller Amelia Chiarenza following the deaths of her parents and a close friend, the podcast explores grief, mortality, and survival, blending personal reflection with focused interviews. It's an unvarnished, clear-eyed look at how we process endings and rebuild identity in their wake.

I loved talking with Amelia about it in this mini episode. 💙 by @_relationscapes

Dr. Jonathan Matthias Lassiter said something I can’t stop thinking about: A lot of what we call “mental health” was defined through a white Eurocentric lens.

That means people of the global majority are often asked to fit into a framework that wasn’t made for them.

Basic therapy often isn't enough unless it encourages unlearning, reclaiming, and naming the system's problems out loud. That can include being open about some of the therapist's beliefs.

I loved this conversation so much because Dr. Lassiter helps us see the mindset underneath the harm, so we can stop turning the pain inward. If this resonates, help it spread by saving or sharing with somebody who needs it.

Full conversation in the podcast!

During the final stretch of his doctoral internship, Dr. Lassiter—a gay Black American man with a chronic illness—was assigned a "diversity project." He was supposed to put himself in the shoes of a marginalized person for 2 hours and write up some reflections about it. His all-white training committee failed him, claiming the program's only Black intern did not demonstrate a good enough understanding of diversity. He heard his dad's voice in his head, "These white people are crazy!" The title of his book was born.

The fact is, the field of psychology has mostly been created by white people for white people. People who don't take cultural context and race into account nearly as much as they should when it comes to mental health. Dr. Lassiter was determined to swim against that tide. He resolved to help individual clients who needed personal therapy, but also to call his entire field to account. To help create systemic change.

He brings his own ancestral values and the work of Black theorists and activists into dialog with the Eurocentric psychological theories he learned in school. He refuses to pretend race doesn't matter because he intimately knows how much it does. Not only can his approach improve the healing of Black and other marginalized folks, it can improve the mental health of everyone in an era where disconnection, individualism, greed, and despair seem overwhelming.

Check out my interview with Dr. Lassiter right now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever else you listen. St0p the scroll. 💙👂
