Some shots from last week’s event down here in Provo. The idea for the panel was hatched over dinner with @anthonyambriz . Within the hour, I had @maklelan and @lindsay_hansen_park agreed to participate, and @_relationscapes on board to moderate. We framed it around “Telling the Truth About Religion in an Age of Misinformation.” The free tickets became available a week before the scheduled night—the only date that worked for our busy schedules—and all 300 tickets were claimed within 30 hours. We had such a demand that attendees had to bring extra chairs.

It was a phenomenal discussion. We live in an era where the internet makes knowledge seeming reachable but often distorted, a period where expertise is undermined and hot takes are valued over seasoned analysis. How do we respond to such a climate? We discussed how our particular platforms are attempts to meet the moments while still playing by the rules of the academy. I was struck by how all of us expressed discomfort and uncertainty, evidence that it’s a complicated issue that requires humility and introspection. But it’s worth it—at least I hope, anyway.

Thanks to everyone who came out. It was a pleasure to meet so many of you. I’m equally honored and befuddled at the privilege to participate in this community of decent humans seeking to better understand the world and those who populate it.

We hope to have a few clips to share at some point.

Two-time guest and friend of the pod Blair Hodges @_relationscapes VM’d me this POV on the debate about what James Talarico is accomplishing by going on Rogan and pinging progressive theological arguments for progressive political positions. If that’s all he had, it would be a problem. But if he has a passport, he’s a valuable player. This sidesteps the opaque question of what his positions are founded on to focus on what he’s able to do.
