Keratin - Melbourne Fringe - Rikia Bell - OPENING FRIDAY

The monstrous feminine meets a grotesque manicure.

the emergence of a creature
an abnormal growth
prior existence scratched into shreds
pushing up nail-bed and scalp
supplements of either curse or charm
without meticulous maintenance
Keratin feeds disarray
bleeding yourself into other
you may feel the asphyxiation
if not polite or palatable enough

‘Keratin’ is a live contemporary dance work that plays with polarities between seduction and repulsion, human and other. It follows the journey of a female monster who’s body has been subjected to a grotesque manicure. The subject klicks, klaws, and krashes discovering how her new form resides in this unknown space. ‘Keratin’ investigates themes of the monstrous feminine, femme fatales, body horror, queerness and the sexualisation of the female body. It challenges our patriarchal expectations surrounding power and confronts our fear of anything perceived as “other”.

Join us at Temperance Hall next Thursday 12 March for Keratin, a work-in-progress showing by Rikia Bell.

Rikia Bell is Temperance Hall's 2025 VCA Mentorship Awardee and recent Apartment Studio Resident.

The Temperance Hall VCA Mentorship Award is awarded to a graduating student from the Victorian College of the Arts Dance program. The Mentorship seeks to identify and foster new talent among Australian dancers and choreographers, with each awardee granted mentorship, residency and practice exchange opportunities facilitated by Temperance Hall.

KERATIN

The emergence of a monster, her body taking on a new form. A mutation of human and other, femininity and monstrosity. ‘Keratin’ explores the monstrous feminine and otherness as a queer experience; analysing how we view the feminine body in horror.
