Keratin - Melbourne Fringe - Rikia Bell - OPENING FRIDAY The monstrous feminine meets a grotesque manicure. the emergence of a creature an abnormal growth prior existence scratched into shreds pushing up nail-bed and scalp supplements of either curse or charm without meticulous maintenance Keratin feeds disarray bleeding yourself into other you may feel the asphyxiation if not polite or palatable enough ‘Keratin’ is a live contemporary dance work that plays with polarities between seduction and repulsion, human and other. It follows the journey of a female monster who’s body has been subjected to a grotesque manicure. The subject klicks, klaws, and krashes discovering how her new form resides in this unknown space. ‘Keratin’ investigates themes of the monstrous feminine, femme fatales, body horror, queerness and the sexualisation of the female body. It challenges our patriarchal expectations surrounding power and confronts our fear of anything perceived as “other”. SATELLITE SANCTUARY: Meet the Residents We are thrilled to announce our successful 2026/27 Satellite Sanctuary Space Residents. This inaugural round attracted interest from a nationwide pool of emerging to mid-career artists, each seeking dedicated space and time to develop their creative practice. Selected by a dedicated panel of valued AUSTI Board Members - Ruth Osborne, Rhiannon Newton and Tim Farrar - we are delighted to announce their unanimous selection of Hannah Brookes & Frances Orlina, and Rikia Bell as the recipients of our inaugural Satellite Sanctuary Space Residencies. The Satellite Sanctuary Space Residency is designed to nurture artistic practice, choreographic research, and creative development for emerging to mid-career artists. Recognising that every creative practice is unique, the residency provides flexibility, time and dedicated studio space needed to support artists at different stages of their practice. A public sharing of their work will take place at the conclusion of each residency, inviting audiences into the artists’ creative processes and providing an opportunity for conversation, reflection and feedback. 1. ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT | Rikia Bell Earlier this year, AUSTI alum Rikia Bell presented ‘Keratin’, a work-in-progress developed through the Temperance Hall 2025 VCA Mentorship Award and 2026 Apartment Studio Residency. The Temperance Hall Mentorship Award supports the development of emerging Australian dance artists and choreographers through mentorship, residency, and practice exchange, creating valuable opportunities for research, experimentation, and the development of new work. “Any opportunity to share art is a gift. This work in particular feels like the beginning of something incredibly important—an ongoing exploration into the monstrous feminine. Creating this character and allowing her to see the world for the first time has instilled within me a deeper understanding of my purpose as an artist.” — Rikia Bell It is always a pleasure to see our alum continuing to explore, create, and contribute so meaningfully to the contemporary dance landscape. Exceptional work, Rikia. We look forward to seeing where this research leads. To finish up my time as Front Studio Resident at Temperance Hall, at 7pm on May 1 I will present a work in development, “Slapdash” Slapdash is a choreographic collage of stolen materials, and a personal processing of influence and context. The work rips, crumples, cuts, shoves, layers and smashes together movement materials sourced from Oliver’s experiences and inspirations in dance. Leaning into inherent tensions in appropriative practices, choreography is corrupted through recollection, iteration, translation and digitisation, and definition between materials is smudged intentionally by their new, heavy handed author. Violence turns inward, and choreographic demands progressively shed layers of confidence, revealing a vulnerable, fallible person underneath the veil of performance object.
