1986-2026. Forty Years of Practice.

From a small studio in Cape Town to a global practice, SAOTA’s evolution has been shaped by the people, places and partnerships that continue to inform the work today.

Over four decades, the practice has grown across continents and cultures while remaining grounded in a commitment to design excellence and a deep understanding of place.

As we mark 40 years, we reflect on the journey that brought us here and the ideas that will shape what comes next.

How can architecture help build a more just and equitable society?

This Thursday, 08 October, SAOTA Principal Mark Bullivant is joined by Nigel Savel and Sher’Neil Savel, co-founders of 9Miles Project, for a conversation exploring architecture, education and social impact through projects such as the 9Miles Learning Centre.

Drawing on the creation of a community learning space, the discussion will consider how thoughtful design can support access, dignity and community empowerment, and create lasting value beyond a building itself.

Soulever by BEYOND, part of the OMNIYAT Group, is a twin-tower waterfront residential development located within the Bay District of Dubai Maritime City. Comprising 503 residences, podium chalets and penthouses, the project forms part of the ongoing transformation of Dubai Maritime City into a major residential and lifestyle destination.

Positioned between the Arabian Gulf and Dubai skyline, the development brings together waterfront living, comprehensive amenities as well as access to the city’s key business and leisure districts. Designed by SAOTA in collaboration with ARRCC, La Casa and Desert INK, the project contributes to a growing collection of landmark developments shaping Dubai’s evolving waterfront.

Last night, we opened our Cape Town exhibition, Shaped by Place.

Thank you to the clients, collaborators, friends and wider design community who joined us to mark 40 years of SAOTA.

The evening brought together many of the people who have shaped the practice, marking the start of a month-long exhibition exploring how context, culture and landscape inform our architecture.

We’ve been working on a book.

Created in collaboration with ORO Editions, Shaped by Place explores how landscape, climate, culture and context influence the way we design.

A reflection on four decades of work across diverse geographies, the book examines the relationship between architecture and place through a collection of SAOTA projects.

This October, Shaped by Place will extend beyond the pages of the book as the SAOTA40 exhibition series returns home to Cape Town.

Taking its name and inspiration from the book, Shaped by Place brings together four decades of architectural exploration through projects, models, drawings, photography and multimedia installations.

Throughout the residence, dedicated display zones are integrated into daily living, creating a curated environment where architecture, interiors and art exist in dialogue. From the intimate wood-clad dining space to the continuity of terrazzo flooring, each element contributes to a home that reflects the owners’ identity while remaining deeply connected to its waterfront setting.
