YINTOUR | South Africa
At Home with @stefanantonisaota
Photography by @kennleung.spacesense

During our YINTOUR journey in Cape Town, we had the pleasure of visiting Beyond, the private residence of architect Stefan Antoni, Founding Partner & Principal of @_saota . The visit offered us a closer look at how architecture, art, and everyday life come together in his own home.

Set into the steep hillside beneath Lion’s Head, Beyond is shaped by its dramatic coastal setting. The house rises vertically along the slope, with the main living space and pool positioned on the uppermost level. Expansive glazing opens the interiors towards the Atlantic Ocean, while a glass floor above the pool creates a striking connection between the spaces. Art and carefully selected materials further shape the character of the home, blurring the boundaries between private residence and gallery.

We are grateful to Stefan Antoni for welcoming us into his home and sharing his perspective on the relationship between architecture, art, and contemporary living.

Mele Studios (@melestudios), founded by Kagiso Makgalemele, presents its inaugural collection at Akra Bar (@akra_bar) Cape Town.

Crafted from steel, wood, and ceramics, the capsule collection explores light and shadow, monolithic forms, and organic layering; creating a visual language that is both parts monastic and sensual.

The activation opens on 22 October with a special guests viewing from 18:00 to 19:00, followed by an opening open to the public. Responding to the collection, the Akra team will serve signature drinks and snacks developed from a Mele Studios brief, alongside a soundscape curated by Kagiso herself. The collection remains on view on 23 and 24 October during Akra’s trading hours, from 18:00 until late.

Marking ASA SADAN’s (@asa.sadan) 5-year anniversary milestone, this collaboration with Patina House (@patina.house94) presents a gallery-style outdoor showroom that merges tactile apparel with curated spatial design. The space bridges contemporary menswear with fine art, mid-century furniture, minimalist compositions, and vintage textiles.

Visitors are invited into an immersive physical engagement into the world of ASA SADAN. Commemorating half a decade of narrative-led craftsmanship, the showcase features curated walkthroughs celebrating the deep connection between Cape Malay and Indian garment making and community.

Forty years of architecture. Four decades of ideas, influences, people, and places that have shaped one of South Africa’s most formidable architectural practices.

The question is no longer whether SAOTA has shaped architecture. That much is evident.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬: 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐀𝐎𝐓𝐀?

Throughout October, Brundyn Arts & Culture plays host to 𝐒𝐀𝐎𝐓𝐀 𝟒𝟎, a month-long exhibition tracing the evolution of the practice across four decades of architectural exploration, ambition, and influence.

On 2 October, at Brundyn Arts & Culture, an extraordinary evening unfolded, marking the launch of SAOTA’s second monograph, Shaped by Place. An occasion to look beyond the buildings and consider the intellectual and creative forces behind them.

Where the first monograph documented the work, the second interrogates its origins: the philosophies, provocations, relationships, and evolving understanding of place accumulated over forty years of practice.

Scape was honoured to moderate a conversation with Peter Rich, Philip Olmesdahl, and Stefan Antoni, exploring not only the architecture, but the thinking that has sustained, challenged, and transformed it.

A defining evening for South African architecture and design.

Here are the highlights.

With 81 jurors bringing perspectives from across the international design landscape, this year’s Awards placed our industry’s work in a wider conversation, exploring the ideas, ambitions, and built realities that propel the discipline. Together, this year’s winners reflect the breadth of a design culture that continues to evolve, challenge convention, and produce work with an increasingly global reach.

Here, an industry accustomed to making things happen found itself with something to celebrate. To the 2026 shortlisters, congratulations on moving the industry forward and sparking a global design conversation.
