Today is World Mental Health Day and to celebrate, we are shining a spotlight on the @_seagals_, a wonderful and inclusive group of women including trans women and non-binary people who step outside their comfort zone to meet for sunrise swims along the Boorloo/Perth coastline, connecting with others, themselves and nature.⁠

Their goal is to create a space where going to the beach for a swim is inclusive and fun. The Sea Gals swimmers free themselves from the internal chatter of negative body image and instead start their day with a positive community-led experience of dawn dipping in the ocean.⁠ ⁠

It all began one morning when founder Tara Jeisman decided to take herself for a dip at a beach close to her home in Perth, then shared the joy of her experience on social media. Other women saw the video and asked if they could join her next dip. The group slowly grew from just five at the first meet-up to over 100 swimmers just one year later. ⁠

Each session starts with an acknowledgement to the dedication to getting up early to come along, followed by a group photo. A song is then blasted as the swimmers plunge into the ocean. Sometimes smaller groups are formed while in the water to share their thoughts on the intention of the swim that day, or maybe to quietly bliss out as the sky moves through all shades of pink and orange. ⁠

It is with absolute joy and disbelief and all the weird and wonderful emotions that I can finally share I’m a WA finalist nominee for the 2027 Young Australian of the Year Awards.

If you were the cheeky (and lovely) person who nominated me, please let me know I would love to know who is responsible!

It’s been an amazing journey from the start of @_seagals_ until now. From the amazing gals myself and the team have met, plus seeing the growth of our other locations around the country that get to spread the Sea Gals effect to women in Sydney, Wollongong, South West, Broome, Newcastle and Gold Coast.

I also can’t forget about the joy and growth Sea Gals has given to myself. Whilst some people might hear about us and wonder ‘what’s so special about a dip’ - others who know what we do understand the positive impact Sea Gals has had on women’s mental health, body image, confidence, growth and empowerment. Not only through a sunrise ocean dip, but through community, open connection, de-stigmatised expectations of women’s appearances, and more.

I’m excited to see where and how Sea Gals grows, and I can genuinely say this nomination wasn’t on my bingo card but I’m grateful it’s an opportunity I’m able to be a part of!

Today, October 10th, is World Mental Health Day!

The purpose of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues. The global theme is “lived experiences heard” and the Australian theme (which we think is quite fitting for Sea Gals) is “together we thrive”.

We know the weight of mental health can often go unnoticed, but here at Sea Gals we encourage you to speak up, reach out and take the first step!
