“Have you been watching The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives?” You asked, I answered. Equal parts trauma, tea, and testimony. 🙏🏾

Endless thanks to @brkmrn for your patience and thoughtful edits.

For people who may not know me well: this creature you love and adore comes from nothing. I am the child of two drug addicts — one whose addiction led to her death, and the other who lives with paranoid schizophrenia. I grew up on food stamps, the beautiful Horizon card, and free school lunch. PBS, Between the Lions and Reading Rainbow, sparked my love for reading and writing. Libraries and after-school programs kept me safe during long summer days.

“Look at me, Look at me, I’m a Head Start kid!” A federally funded program that provides education to low-income families. Other Government-subsidized programs and grants made me the first of five kids to graduate from a four-year college — not just by helping me get there (shout out to TRiO + ETS) but by helping me stay there by paying me above minimum wage through college — all my love to Sheldon, Lindsey, and Becky. Pell Grants and FAFSA covered tuition, while Jamar at the Department of Workforce Services stepped in when my car broke down or textbooks were due. Scholarships through the Multicultural Youth Center and the Black Student Union — two organizations my university has since eliminated — gave me community and support through those hard years. (Shame on you Weber State!)

And yes, I worked my ass off to have the life I have now. Really hard. But the truth is: I only have this life because of the kindness of strangers, and government funded programs intended for poor kids like me. Because someone went out of their way to make sure I had what I needed — whether that was money, mentorship, or a shoulder to cry on.

There is absolutely, positively no way I would be living the life I have, working in the art world, holding the job I hold now, without these supports. And I am devastated to see so many of them disappear. I think about the versions of me out there who will never reach the level they deserve to — not because they aren’t brilliant or hardworking, but because the ladder has been pulled up behind us.

People like to call this a culture war. In some ways it is. But for many of us — and for the ones coming after us — this is life and death. And they’re killing us on purpose. by @_shaqy

Publicist by day, writer by night. So proud of all the great stories my team and I secured this past year! This is hardly even a snapshot. Being a publicist is an invisible and often thankless job, but I’m so grateful to work with the best people and organizations in the art game. Cheers to another year of wins! ✨ by @_shaqy

For the first “Brow to Brow,” @the_unibrow founder @epricco and editor-at-large @_shaqy talk through what they’re looking forward to this fall, what they missed this summer, and what they can’t stop thinking about.

Roy DeCarava, Ibrahim Mahama, Azzedine Alaïa, Widow’s Bay, The Odyssey, museums, galleries, Diet Coke, popcorn, the cultural zeitgeist, Issue 03, and what it means to simply love looking at and talking about art.

Every great mystery leaves clues. So does every great work of art.

In a new episode of Unibrow Radio, @_shaqy speaks with curator Patrick R. Crowley about “JANE!” at Stanford’s @cantorarts, an exhibition exploring the life, legacy, and mysterious death of Jane Stanford.

A collector of oddities, advocate for the arts, and one of the central figures behind Stanford University, Jane remains as enigmatic in death as she was in life. The exhibition brings together art, grief, institutional history, and the ghost stories that still surround her.

A few years ago I kind of made a silent vow that I was done writing about my life. I just… couldn’t anymore. As many of my friends know, my story is a sad one. A really sad one. And as much as it’s about strength, it’s also about loneliness, shame, and a pain that I was done trying to analyze.

But over the last year, the universe has forced me to sit with it more. To think about my journey, and how it’s shaped me, and particularly who helped shape it. Alas, I give you this essay about my beloved sister Rachel. (Link in bio.)

This woman is everything to me. Everything. And I’m so grateful to Alta, and particularly Lydia, for giving me the opportunity to share with the world how special of a person Rachel is.

This essay will bring you lots of tears. Please… it is not about that. It is about sisterhood. What family should look and feel like. And celebrating the light in all the darkness. Here’s to you, Rach. Thank you for choosing me. ❤️ by @_shaqy

@emmafineman is the perfect unibrow. There isn’t really anything she can’t do; fashion, design, painting, sculpture… she knows how to create space.

In her introduction to this interview @_shaqy calls Emma a “fine-artist-slash-musician-slash-designer-slash-stylist-slash-performer-slash-multi-hyphenate” and it really does fit the bill here.

👀 Read it at The-Unibrow.com. Link in bio.

Emma’s show “Devotion” is on view at @alexanderberggruen in NYC through June 24, 2026.
