Revival, Revival of What? Belgian Signage and Typographic Imaginary

Mateo Broillet is a graphic designer and researcher interested in typography, visual culture and the ways design shapes our experience of the everyday. His work explores the forms and meanings carried by the visual language of public space.

What happens when Belgian signage and vernacular typography are revived, and whose histories, values and visual identities are carried forward in the process?

His one-year research project at SLARG examines the cultural and political imaginaries embedded in Belgian signage and typography, asking what is at stake when these visual forms are rediscovered, preserved or reinterpreted.

The Everyday of Territorial Struggles, On/Off Screen

Lietje Bauwens is an artist and filmmaker whose practice explores the relationships between moving images, collective action and political struggle. Her work engages with people resisting the transformation of urban space and the conditions that shape everyday life in Brussels.

How can filmmaking make visible everyday forms of resistance to the privatisation of public space and the commodification of housing, and broaden our understanding of what counts as political action?

Her PhD research at SLARG and ARIA (University of Antwerp) explores how filmmaking and collective montage can bring these often overlooked struggles into view, both on and off screen.

WAKA Studio: Art, Education, Research and Society, Njombé-Penja

Guy Woueté is an artist and researcher whose practice explores the relationships between art, education and society. Working from Njombé-Penja in Cameroon, he investigates how artistic practice can create spaces for collective learning, exchange and social transformation.

How can an artistic practice become a form of institution-making rooted in local realities, collective knowledge and relationships with the land?

His PhD research at Sint Lucas Antwerpen (KdG) and ARIA (University of Antwerp) develops WAKA Studio as a space for artistic research and collective experimentation. The project collaborates with Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, where Guy will undertake an annual research residency.

The Hi-Vis Workie: Reflective Workwear from Appropriation to Queercoding

Jivan van der Ende is an artist whose practice spans performance, installation, video and print. She explores how everyday materials, clothing and social codes can be reworked through artistic practice.

How can reflective workwear become a site for exploring gender, labour, visibility and queer expression?

Her one-year research at SLARG investigates how workwear and its associated social codes can be appropriated, embodied and queered.

A Circle of Birds: On Recomposition as Murmuration

How can collective histories be reactivated through storytelling, sound and artistic recomposition, without being fixed in the archive?

SLARG welcomes AZ OOR (first slide) and Sofyann Ben Youssef (second slide), who join Joachim Ben Yakoub in this two-year collective research project at Sint Lucas Antwerpen (KdG). Together, they explore the traces of Ahl El Hijra, a Brussels-based art collective active in the 1970s, through visual, sonic and poetic forms, bringing overlooked memories and histories back into movement.

AZ OOR is an Amazigh Futurist, visual artist, noisist, storyteller and poet working between Marrakech and Rotterdam. Sofyann Ben Youssef is a musician, composer and researcher whose practice engages with sound, musical traditions and cultural memory. Joachim Ben Yakoub is both a researcher in the project and its supervisor within SLARG.

We look forward to following this collective research as it unfolds.

Our third edition of RAIVE Summer School was once again a fruitful week full of new ideas and connections. RAIVE was born from the desire to offer a space for artists to meet and work collaboratively with performative arts and technology. Each year we grow a little and this year we had thirteen participants. We saw an AI fashion show come into being, told our secrets, got to know the term ‘Italian brain rot’ and witnessed a piano being turned into a racing car. All in all, a successful and fun week!

As each year we give huge thanks to the @royalconservatoireantwerp for hosting us, @sintlucasantwerpen and @_slarg_ for facilitating, @umutreldem and @giusycarusopianist_researcher from @creatie.research - @research_conservatoireantwerp for the wonderful collaboration and the participants for making RAIVE what it is. We are already looking forward to next year!

Special thanks to @cactuar__ and @nigel_grey_dubois

ADANIA SHIBLI
‘Language as an Impasse’

Closing lecture · SLARG Research Week ’26

Friday 30 October 2026
18:00–19:30
Showroom, Sint Lucas Antwerpen

We are pleased to welcome Palestinian writer Adania Shibli for the closing lecture of SLARG’s Research Week ’26.

In ‘Language as an Impasse’, Shibli explores what happens when language falters: when words disappear, stall, repeat, or give way to silence. Taking the experience of becoming dysfluent in writing as a point of departure, she reflects on silence as a counterpoint to speaking and on writing at the limits of language.

SLARG is back for a new academic year!

And... we’re kicking things off with Research Week 2026:

A week bringing together artistic research at Sint Lucas Antwerpen School of Arts through a research exhibition, a screening programme, presentations and a public lecture.

At the centre of the week is a research exhibition bringing together the work of SLARG’s PhD and other researchers. Rather than presenting finished artworks, the exhibition makes research itself visible: its questions, processes, materials, experiments and forms of knowledge. It offers a space to encounter artistic research as something in development, and to see how different practices generate and share knowledge.

On Wednesday 28 October, we open the exhibition with a tour, drinks and conversation. On Thursday, a screening programme with Danial Shah, Bianca Baldi and Sammy Baloji brings film into dialogue with artistic research, with space for discussion and exchange with the audience, researchers from other institutions and students across the arts.

Friday afternoon focuses on presentations of completed research projects, followed by a public lecture by Palestinian writer Adania Shibli, ‘Language as an Impasse’, exploring the breakdown of language, the disappearance of words and silence as a counterpoint to speaking.

The research exhibition remains open throughout the week, inviting students, researchers and visitors to spend time with the work and follow the different trajectories of research.

SLARG is welcoming you!
