Our third edition of RAIVE Summer School was once again a fruitful week full of new ideas and connections. RAIVE was born from the desire to offer a space for artists to meet and work collaboratively with performative arts and technology. Each year we grow a little and this year we had thirteen participants. We saw an AI fashion show come into being, told our secrets, got to know the term ‘Italian brain rot’ and witnessed a piano being turned into a racing car. All in all, a successful and fun week!

As each year we give huge thanks to the @royalconservatoireantwerp for hosting us, @sintlucasantwerpen and @_slarg_ for facilitating, @umutreldem and @giusycarusopianist_researcher from @creatie.research - @research_conservatoireantwerp for the wonderful collaboration and the participants for making RAIVE what it is. We are already looking forward to next year!

Without a Center, with Many ~ Research Seminar { Part 3 }

Letters were once inseparable from the communities, languages, and meanings they mediated. In an era of globalised tools and mass digital production, since the invention of the printed press, form has drifted from its content. With @ayoh.kre and @joachimbenyakoub , we to took a closer look at how Armenian script and language has been shaped, moulded, pushed to the margins by the logics of Western colonial modernity and its dominant writing systems, asking what was lost in that process of modernisation and standardisation, but also how we can render that erasure visible as a form of reparation.

Questioning the linearity of time, we wondered whether letter design can be a means of repairing broken relations between the way we understand and the way we inhabit the world through various scripts. We tentatively reorganised our thoughts and imagined various ways of making sense of different possible futures, where many different letters, words and worlds are possible.

L’acte de traduire signifie le démontage d’une logique linguistique et sa reconstruction dans une autre. C’est un transfert dévastateur. Pendant ce processus, une désintégration à plusieurs échelles se produit : lettres, mots, structures, systèmes de pensée. Chaque niveau cède l’un après l’autre, dans la perspective d’une réorganisation dans un autre monde, une autre réalité. Il y a un moment clé — un point, un espace — qui s’ouvre pendant ce transfert. C’est là où la pensée à traduire n’est plus ni dans la langue d’origine, ni encore dans la langue traduite. Elle est suspendue, désactivée, libérée. Je l’appelle l’espace zéro: l’espace de la création.

🐜 As part of her PhD research at @sintlucasantwerpen - KdG and ARIA - Antwerp Research Institute for the Arts (University of Antwerp), Garine Gokceyan warmly invites you to a two-day public research seminar.

On Tuesday May 26, we will host a day of hybrid presentations and discussions, bringing together multilingual voices, around authorship and ownership in collaborative design practices. This seminar day addresses the politics of accessible resource-making alongside approaches to unlearning the language of design. It is also a good occasion to celebrate the launch of the “Alphabettes Soup” book by @bikini.books featuring contributions from many of our guests.

On Wednesday May 27, we will gather around a workshop led by @khajag and @naima_labureau , entitled “Revivals Reconsidered” to discuss the question of what constitutes a Typeface revival. Does its significance shift across time and geography? What politics are embedded within it?

This workshop invites participants to move beyond rigid definitions and explore revival as a living, evolving practice.
Together with the participants, we will critically rethink this practice and explore possible futures by creating a shared set of revival-making guidelines.

Who is this workshop for?
Design and art students, practitioners and educators in the field of graphic design, type design, visual arts, paleography, calligraphy, lettering, researchers and writers engaging with graphic archives, interested in alternative pedagogies and decolonial, queer, feminist methodologies and histories, multilinguists, diasporas etc.

𝘙𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘣𝘪𝘢𝘯?! 𝘙𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘳?! 𝘙𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩?!

The project “Liever Heks?!” at S.M.A.K. centres on the figure of the witch as a powerful and ambiguous symbol, historically linked to resistance and nonconformity, and reinterprets it through contemporary perspectives. Using materials from Suzan Daniel Fund and Amsab-ISG, which preserves LGBTQ+ histories in Belgium, the project creates connections between past struggles and present identities.

The archive is not presented as something fixed, but is turned into an active, public process in which visitors are invited to participate. Participants are invited to bring their own documentation, placing them in dialogue with existing archival materials. Through collective practices such as collage, screen printing, and quilting, these contributions grow into a layered and “polyphonic” whole that reflects multiple voices and perspectives.

For the creation of “Whirly Loops”, our team The Algorithmic Gaze was inspired by “Bow Echo” by @azizhazara, where five young boys climb a mountain on which they then play the kazoo in strong winds. In dialogue with this work, we designed five “whirly tubes” controlled by motors that turn based on visitor’s movements. Creating an evolving sonic experience, the generated wind answers back to Hazara’s “Bow Echo”.

The installation can be seen at @smakgent, and will be running between the 1st of April and the 3rd of May 2026. Be sure to pass by in the upcoming month to experience the installation yourself!

At the beginning of March, the research team I’m part of welcomed guests from the @aisecrett_eu consortium for a two-day machine learning workshop at our campus @sintlucasantwerpen.

The meeting brought together researchers and artists to explore how machine learning can be used as a creative tool. Participants trained custom image models and learned how to make them interactive. The hands-on workshop was part of an ongoing international collaboration between art and design institutions investigating the role of artificial intelligence in creative practices.

Last February, our research project brought us to Brno, Czech Republic. There we shared the work “Assume calibration pose: this breath isn’t mine”, which has already been presented in Barcelona, Antwerp and Tallinn. Every time we perform it we adjust the piece to the current status of the research, allowing ourselves to discover new elements and perspectives of the work that we would not encounter otherwise.

In Brno, we performed in the context of the Theatre Conference JAMU, organised by the Theatre Faculty of Janáček Academy of Performing Arts. The conference was about “ANALOGUE vs. DIGITAL HUMAN feat. ART”. Thank you, @df_jamu, for hosting us and organise such a good event. And special thanks to @nataliekulina for sharing the best bistros and cafés in Brno.

MARS supports the International Artistic Research Training Program

From formal exchange to shared processes and creative play.

The first two years of the VLIROUS International Training Program (ITP), in partnership with Sint Lucas School of Arts (Antwerp), included training in Belgium for selected senior faculty from the PWU School of Fine Arts and Design and School of Music, followed by sustained online sessions.

In its third year, Belgian mentors came to Manila to partner with the Filipino faculty participants to engage 20 chosen grantees from across the Philippines—expanding a growing community for artistic research.

As part of the external programming of the PWU Artistic Research Center (ARC) for the MARS Center for Printmaking, Program Coordinator for MARS and ITP faculty participant, Melai Arguzon-Aquino co-facilitated the Print Party with Belgian-based printmaker and educator Gerard Leysen. They were assisted by Fonz Burce, president of Malvar Ink, PWU School of Fine Arts and Design student printmaking organization. Special guest participant was Belgium-based designer and educator, Annelys de Vet.
