Last Friday was something really special. ✨

A room full of first responders came together and, for a couple of hours, we did something we don’t always give ourselves permission to do…

We stepped out of response mode. 🤍

As paramedics, we spend so much of our lives in a state of readiness — assessing, anticipating, responding, moving, helping and taking care of everyone else.

But last Friday, there was nowhere to rush to.

No radio.
No calls.
No adrenaline.
No next patient waiting for us.

Just space to breathe, soften, rest and reconnect.

The evening was intentionally created to give our bodies and nervous systems a chance to slow down.

🌿 Meditation to bring our attention out of the noise and back into the present moment.

🌿 Gentle restorative yoga using bolsters and supportive props, allowing the body to completely let go without needing to stretch, strengthen or perform.

🌿 Sound healing with crystal singing bowls, chimes, tuning forks and other soothing instruments — creating layers of sound and vibration to help quiet the mind and invite the body to settle.

🌿 And most importantly, permission to rest. To unclench the jaw.
Drop the shoulders.
Take a deeper breath.
Let the body feel supported.

And for me, this work is incredibly personal.

I’m a paramedic too. I know what it feels like to spend a shift in response mode, to move from call to call, to carry the things we see and experience, and then try to switch back into everyday life when the shift is over.

So this isn’t wellness being taught to first responders by someone who doesn’t understand the world we live in.

It’s being created by someone who lives it, understands it and knows how important it is to have a place where we can finally exhale. 🤍

For a little while, we weren’t paramedics, firefighters, police officers or healthcare workers.

We were simply human beings who needed a break. Until the next one! 🩷 🚑 🚓 🚒 #paramedics #yoganiagara #niagaraems by @_so_hum

Before committing to and investing in a retreat that highlights a 90 min Myo Yin practice, it might be nice to try out a studio class just to get a feel for the benefits of this type of work. I can post every day and talk till I’m blue in the face about how amazing it is, but you don’t get it until you’ve tried it.

It’s an ideal practice first thing in the morning when everything is dehydrated from sleeping all night. It’s so amazing after work whether you’ve been on your feet all day or sitting! It’s also the perfect way to prepare your body for sleep. Win win Win!

Will you come try it? by @_so_hum

This is my present mission:

Teach people how to help themselves, listen to their bodies, and trust the practice!

You don’t actually need to come to every class I teach. Although I understand perfectly well how the environment, community, teacher and teachings can be exactly what you need/want week to week; more important to me is that you can do this whenever you want!

You wake up first thing in the morning you’re feeling stiff. Take 10 minutes: roll something.

You just got home from work and you’re feeling drained of energy. Roll something and maybe do a Yin shape for 5 to 10 minutes.

If you’re someone who feels like you need to do a course or some sort of workshop to know as much as possible before you do your own thing … keep watching this space - I’ve got something coming!

P.S. There's a free class happening @mind_body_spirit_fest tomorrow 10-4 @ironwoodcider (NOTL)

Tuesday thoughts:

Home is a state of mind - you come home when your state of mind is calm, safe, and relaxed

The power of BREATH is talked about everywhere and it seems ridiculous because we all breathe every day for our survival. But it’s the quality of Breath that matters. It’s the speed at which you breathe that matters. The depth to which you breathe is important. The mindfulness while you breathe makes a difference.

We make time for everything but our own well being.
We’ll prioritize everything else and cast away the short simple practices that can make hours of difference with complex tasks later on.

Comment "I want to come home!" and I'll send you the details of my retreat which start to give you the tools to do just that! by @_so_hum

Haha Sunday scaries makes me scroll through my photos app looking for something in the past that was less intimidating than starting a new school year 😌

I landed in summer of 2017… when I deferred my Masters of Education with UofT (which I later ditched completely) to stay in Bali so I could be a dive instructor and teach yoga as a sub. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Nusa Lembongan ended up being a magical place where I met @carolinelayzellyoga and did Yin Yoga for the first time through the lens of Chinese Meridians.

You guys, I hated it and I loved it!

I hated it because my brain would NOT shut up.
I hated it because it demanded something of me that was not familiar - surrender - but not like giving up.
Surrender like letting go intentionally without clawing it back.
And I loved it because, with practice, the melt was like a win (surrender!) and I loved it because afterwards I floated home.
I loved it because it had me thinking about my body from a lens that was familiar yet unknown.

And I wanted to know more. What was this line? What is it linked to? Is this why I’m feeling this way?

Well several courses later and some time and confidence boosts I’m sharing my yin era with anyone who will give me the time!

Guess it’s time to put practice into action, come back to 2026, and surrender to the new school year.

Thanks for travelling down memory lane with me 🫶

Sometimes we just need to know if the universe is on our side.

Sometimes we just need a little nudge from the universe to confirm our desires, our fears, our power…

Sometimes we need a different perspective.

Sometimes you just need a reminder that you’re on the right path and you need to keep going!

Reclaim your capacity.

I’m flooding my Instagram grid with photos and videos of my time at the cottage and all the videos I took of my personal practice. It was how I reclaimed my own capacity to deal with anything this summer. It was how my body and I communicated so I could remove whatever was blocking my ability to receive while also cultivating enough energy to get through the day.

Let me guide you through the experience so you can feel it for yourself and then you take home the tools and experience so you can continue to help yourself at home. It’s an investment for sure. An investment into your wellness, an additional tool for your toolbox, and a pampering for 3 hours that I know you deserve.

Sunday throwback to spring.

Why are Sunday scaries a thing? And why am I having it because I have to (choose to) go in and prep my classroom??

Summer’s not over (it ends when my retreat begins Sep 20 😉)

And there’s still beautiful weather outside.
There’s still a week before students arrive.

In yoga I practice staying in the moment.
My application in life is a work in progress.

Especially when I have to stay in the moment longer than a few minutes and there’s no instructor reminding me every minute or so to focus on the breath.

If it feels like time is moving too quickly and there’s too much going on, it seems counterintuitive to add another thing to the schedule. This mini Retreat though is exactly what we need when we feel overwhelmed.

Myofascial release (MFR) is a self Massage, a way to move the tension we inevitably holding in our bodies. And it comes back if we don’t deal with the root cause of tension, but you learned how to self treat while you work on that roof cause.

Yin: I never thought much of Yin Yoga until I tried it. It creates so much space overtime if you let go. It trains your brain to focus on breathwork and trains you to use breath to reduce stress.

Indie head massages are culturally an Indian custom to show love and care to family members. Let someone massage your head with loving kindness.

Spiritual guidance: sometimes you just need a little nudge from the Universe and it might come in the form of tarot. It’s always interesting to consider what shows up.

Finally, nourishment: tea and snacks that warm the body and the soul.

Will you gift this to yourself?
If not, send this to someone who can gift it to you! 😉
