Your marketing isn't broken. Your message is.
I find the invisible string in founder-led businesses

The annoying part is that this can look exactly like a marketing problem.

So you post more.
Try a different hook.
Redo the website.
Maybe decide LinkedIn hates you this week.

Meanwhile, the actual problem is sitting underneath all of it:

People can see you.

They just don’t quite know what you’re the obvious choice for.

More visibility doesn’t fix that.

A clearer signal does.

Samsung gets to say, “We did it first.”
And they’re right.

But Apple has spent years building a brand where their customers don’t particularly care who did it first. They care when Apple does it.

That’s a very different advantage.

You don’t have to own the invention if you own the interpretation.

Being first matters.

But being the one people were waiting for? That’s worth paying attention to.

Also… no I still don’t want the foldable iPhone 😂😂 but i will still stick with the regular iPhone. by @_thatbobbi

Most experts aren’t short on things they *could* be known for.

That’s usually the problem.

You build enough experience and expertise, and suddenly there are five different directions you could take the business — and all five make sense.

So positioning isn’t always about coming up with a better idea.

Sometimes it’s about looking at the evidence.

What are people already coming to you for?
What do you see that other people don’t?
Where do your best work, the right buyers and the opportunities you actually want overlap?

That’s where the signal usually is.

Because once you know what you want to be known for, the rest of the business has something to organize around.

If you’re good at a lot of things but can’t figure out which one should become *the thing*, that’s the work I do.

Chick-fil-A doesn’t have to tell you what makes their service different.

You already know.

“My pleasure.”
The ridiculously efficient drive-through.
The way you expect to be treated before you even walk in.

That’s what happens when a signal gets strong enough.

People stop needing you to explain what makes you different.

They start explaining it for you.

And that’s the goal.

Not just a better message.

A message that travels🔎

Being good at a lot of things sounds like a pretty good problem to have.

Until you’re trying to explain what you actually do.

Because after you’ve been doing this for a while, there’s usually a lot of evidence.

Things you’re really good at.
Things people already pay you for.
Things people keep coming to you for.
Things you’ve learned from doing this over and over again.

And from the inside, they can look like a bunch of separate things.

But usually, there’s a pattern.

Something underneath all of it that explains why people come to you, how you think, and what you see that other people might not.

That’s the part I find interesting.
Not picking one thing and pretending the rest doesn’t exist.

Figuring out what all of it adds up to.

Because that might be the thing you should actually be known for.

Maybe the goal was never more followers.

Maybe it was becoming someone worth remembering.

Because 10,000 people vaguely knowing who you are isn’t necessarily more valuable than 1,000 people knowing exactly why they come to you.

Reach matters.

But reach without recognition is just a bigger room full of people who aren’t quite sure why you’re there. taken in Florida by @_thatbobbi

I’ve made a lot of money over the years by being the person who says, “Yeah, I can do that.”

And most of the time, I actually can😂

But I’ve been thinking about how easy it is to accidentally build a business that way.

Someone needs something. You’re good at it. They’ll pay you for it. So you do it.

Then one day you look around and realize you’re doing 14 different things and you’re not entirely sure how half of them fit into where you’re trying to go.

So this is the question I keep coming back to lately:
Just because something is a good opportunity, does that mean it’s a good direction?

I’m starting to think those are two very different things.

The Sydney Sweeney ad has millions of views.

People are debating it. Female athletes are responding to it. Sydney Sweeney is, once again, the center of a massive conversation.

But do you remember the company that paid for the ad?

That’s the part I find interesting.

Going viral and actually owning the attention aren’t necessarily the same thing.

Because if everyone remembers the controversy, the celebrity, or even the ad itself…but not *you*?

Who really got the value from all that attention?

Curious what you think: brilliant marketing or attention that belonged more to Sydney than the brand? by @_thatbobbi

I don’t think ai slop is really about ai.

I think it’s wondering how much effort someone put into something before we give it some of our attention.

Don’t get me wrong there’s def ai slop like the stories you read that are supposed to be a first hand experience and really it’s a click the Amazon link to find out what I mean. by @_thatbobbi
