झड़पें / JHADPEIN The Gathered’s second production. Based on Catherine Hayes’ Skirmishes, Jhadpein is an intimate story of two sisters, Jyoti and Rita, caring for their ailing mother — and of everything that sits beneath the everyday arguments: love, resentment, rivalry, guilt, dependence and years of unspoken hurt. In this production, the mother is reimagined as a puppet, creating a world that is at once intimate, tender and unsettling — and allowing us to look at memory, caregiving and the complicated ways in which we hold on to the people we love. Gathered’s second production, Jhadpein! It has been a privilege to collaborate with Keval Arora on this production - a mentor, theatre-maker and someone whose artistic sensibility we have admired for years. At The Gathered, we are driven by a desire to make theatre that is purposeful, contemporary and connected to the world around us. Theatre that asks questions, creates conversations and, hopefully, stays with you beyond the room. Jhadpein brings together a wonderful ensemble of actors - Shalini Baxi, Shweta Pasrichs, Harshini Misra and Chisha Kapoor — who have brought tremendous generosity, sensitivity and depth to the work. The world of the play has been beautifully shaped by Sarthak Narula, whose design gives this intimate story a visual language of its own. And a special shout-out to Rahul, who has been there to help us put this together, hold the many moving pieces in place and, somehow, make it all happen each time. We couldn’t do it without you. There is a lot of love, thought and craft that has gone into putting this production together, and we’re so happy to finally share it with you. Tickets on BMS. झड़पें is an intimate and emotionally charged play about sisterhood, caregiving, ageing, and the tensions that accumulate within families over time. Set in Delhi, the play follows two sisters, Jyoti and Rita, as they navigate the responsibility of caring for their ailing mother while confronting years of love, resentment, dependence, rivalry, and unspoken hurt. What appear to be small, everyday disagreements gradually reveal the deeper emotional histories beneath them. At its heart, झड़पें is about the ways families can become trapped in recurring patterns of conflict, care, guilt, and affection. The play finds the extraordinary in the ordinary, asking what happens when the people we know best become the people we struggle most to understand. In this production, the mother has been reimagined as a puppet. This choice allows the relationship between Jyoti, Rita, and their mother to exist somewhere between the intimate and the mechanical. Through this reimagining, the production explores memory, dependence, and the complicated ways in which we hold on to the people we love. झड़पें is directed by Keval Arora and presented by The Gathered, in association with Shivam Gupta Casting, for its opening shows.
