🎉Celebrating 40 years in #healthcare, if you count animal health and a brief stop in respiratory therapy.

If you’re new to my page, thank you for stopping by-here are a few tidbits about how I got here.

📣 Started in a respiratory therapy program in ‘85 realizing I don’t like sputum- shout out to RTs. Note: This came back to haunt me as a CCRN in the trauma ICU for extra hours. 🫁. suctioning trachs= chills up my spine.
•
Was a vet tech at a large/small animal clinic back home in Canton Ohio. Sick animals make me really sad, so Dr. Doolittle I was not.
•
Found my passion in a nursing home, so off to #nursing school I went.
•
Transferred to UNC Chapel Hill. Getting accepted as an out of state student was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, academically. Graduating from a top five nursing program was even harder.
•
My airway journey began in 91 as an aspiring CRNA, working as a nurse extern in the UNC PACU. Graduated in ‘92 and off to Charleston, SC I went. If you know me, I don’t sit still for very long, so passing gas in a mask was not for me.
•
Commissioned in 93 as an officer and Flight Nurse in the Air Force Reserves-also lived in Alabama and Texas-great food y’all! . My favorite places in the world are the Azores black sand beaches and Germany (K-town) during Christmas.
•
Accidentally found my way into home infusion therapy in 93 until 2008, and mental health in 95.
•
Started NP School at the Univ. of North Dakota in ‘95-long story how I got there. I later changed over to clinical nurse specialist, finishing in 2009.
•
Left NP school to get my first masters in health admin in 97 to enter the pharma and medical device industry-been in ENT and Sleep some way since ‘02. Specializing in nasal function for 8 years.
•
Became Dr. Davidson and a professor /SME at Liberty University in ‘20 teaching PhD and masters students health policy and grant writing, and undergrad-medical billing coding, & reimbursement. Adjunct at CMU since ‘18
•
I’ve always worked multiple jobs.
•
I have one son who’s the love of my life, a Rottweiler named Tank and a Golden named Tessa.

The impact this part of our bodily system has on multitude of others. The ways medicine can and should utilize it and how it can be done. Do join us on the 2nd of October, 3 pm UK time and 10am EST time in US. Recording will also be available after.

This patient had 23 symptoms… and one of the biggest clues was the nostrils. 👃

Orthodontists don’t only look at teeth.
We look at breathing.

Very small or narrow nostrils often mean high nasal resistance → a child switches to mouth breathing → the tongue drops → the upper jaw grows narrow → teeth crowd.

So sometimes the red flag isn’t the crooked teeth.
It’s the airway showing on the face first.

The body is trying to breathe.
The teeth are just telling the story.

👁 Red flags to watch for in your child’s face:

❌ Mouth open at rest
❌ Dry, cracked lips
❌ Snoring or noisy breathing
❌ Crooked teeth by age 6–7
❌ Delayed speech
❌ Tired look / dark under-eyes
❌ Long face or weak chin
❌ Frequent colds or sinus issues
❌ Daytime fatigue or hyperactivity
❌ Bedwetting past age 5

⸻

🛠️ How we help:
• Palatal expansion (RME, etc.)
• Aligners, braces or hybrid approach
• Myofunctional therapy (in-house or referral)
• Functional appliances
• Growth tracking (cephs, 3D scans, clinical exams)
• ENT collaboration where needed

⸻

👶 Your child’s face is full of clues.
Don’t ignore them.

🌱 Early intervention isn’t about rushing treatment — it’s about gently guiding growth in the right direction.

Why is the nose so unappreciated? 🫩 @_thenoseknows

We barely think about it, yet the nose performs dozens of vital functions that keep the entire body in balance. From filtering and humidifying air to regulating pressure and supporting posture — it does far more than we realize.

Watch the full interview to learn why the nose deserves the spotlight 💡

A blocked nose can make it harder to sleep, concentrate, and even stay calm during the day. We want our kids properly oxygenated! 🤧

Here are a few ways to help clear things up 👃💤

🌿 Nasal sprays or saline rinses
💆‍♀️ Try a light nasal massage/tapping sides of nose and blowing the nose
😌 Practice Buteyko breathing- will do a post on this this week
🩺 Check in with an ENT
💧 Use a humidifier at night (dehumidifier during day to stop mold)
🌸 Immunotherapy if allergies are part of the picture
🦷 Palatal expansion can often make more room for easy breathing
👃 Magnetic dilators- see my last post on these
🤝 Working with naturopath or chiro can help too

The constant stuffy nose my son had almost brought me to my knees some nights.

These can all make a big difference for calmer nights and how your child grows.

👃 Your Child’s Nose Shapes More Than Their Breathing — It Shapes Their Face.
When the nose works well, it encourages nasal breathing — helping the upper jaw grow wide, the face stay balanced, and the airway stay open.

When it’s blocked (by allergies, adenoids, or a deviated septum), growth shifts downward and backward — leading to narrow arches, crowded teeth, and a smaller airway.

That’s why orthodontics today isn’t just about straight teeth — it’s about creating space for teeth and for air. 🌬️

👶 What Early Interceptive Orthodontics Does

* Guides jaw and facial growth gently
* Creates space for permanent teeth
* Supports healthy breathing & posture
* Reduces the need for complex treatment later

👨‍👩‍👧 Who It’s For

* Children (ages 4–12) in growth stages
* Teens needing airway-friendly treatment
* Even adults who want function-focused orthodontics

🚩 Red Flags Parents Should Watch For

❌ Mouth open at rest / mouth breathing
❌ Snoring or restless sleep
❌ Crowded teeth before age 7
❌ Speech delays or lisp
❌ Dark circles under the eyes, tired look
❌ Forward head posture or slouching

📩 DM us if you’re curious about whether early orthodontics is right for your child, teen, or even yourself.

🎙️ For the curious: Watch our podcast about the Nose — airing 9th September 2025, and check out our previous post about tongue posture to see how these two work together.
