Grateful today, tomorrow and always for growing up amongst people who looked different to me, taught me swear words in other languages, broke down everyday mysteries (how to use bidet/squat toilet!), shared their food with me, and built up my understanding of a myriad of cultures, religions, and perspectives. Sometimes, the world tries to teach us that this doesn’t or shouldn’t exist. We reaffirm, in both loud and quiet ways, that it does. #TCK by @_thirdculture

A good friend reminded me to not get bogged down with creating ‘perfect’ content to suit algorithms (even though this is literally our jobs)- but make content that I myself love & enjoy making. These questions made me reflect on many things:
I didn’t have a place to call home
If I associated myself with only one culture and neglected the other, I was never truly telling 100% of who I was.
With years of reflection, I finally learned to appreciate that having multiple ethnicities is a richness and strength. I learned to identify myself as Italian-Bengali and not just Bengali or Italian. If people didn’t like my answer, that was their problem, not mine.
With years, I also understood that even though I didn’t have a physical home in my birthplace, home is where your heart is. Home is what you choose to make it.
Now I like embracing both of my cultures: I am Italian by birth and Bengali by blood, and I love them both equally.

Urmi was born and raised in Italy. During her childhood and teenagehood, she lived both in Palermo and Milano. She also spent a year in the UK.
Now she is currently residing in Canada.

2/3 As I reached my mid-20s, I felt an identity crisis when it came to identifying my cultural identity. Who am I? What do I stand for? What cultures do I want to represent?

After moving to Canada, the struggle for cultural identity became much stronger when I was asked the question: “Where are you from?” I always struggled and hesitated to answer. Do I say I am Bengali only and keep it short? Do I say I am Italian? No matter what answer I gave, people questioned me…”You don’t look Italian; why do you have an Italian accent when you speak English?”

No matter what I said, people were not convinced of my ethnicity and where I came from… [cont.]
