This reel shows some of the behind-the-scenes process behind After the Fire. It follows the sculpture from charcoal to 3D print, from mold to kiln-fired glass, from photograph back to sculpture and finally to its installation in the gallery. I’ve been prepping for my thesis show, and in the process I’ve been playing with my final materials.

A lot of my work has to do with the translation of one material into another as a way of talking about the kind of changes we go through that no one sees.

Here you can see my collection of paper charcoal I use in my charcoal mosaic. I use paper and plastic and the original coal. You have to look closely to see the difference, but once you do, you know something has happened. Change has occurred.

Some of the biggest changes in our lives happen quietly.

It’s my last semester at parsons and this next Friday July 17th is my last open studios. I’m in my feelings about it. I have a gorgeous studio in the middle of Manhattan with a skylight! Adaptation and change is central to my work. Starting with a symbol like charcoal was all about the transformation it had gone through. Pushing it to change and change is the whole point. In every new embodiment a mark is left but we adapt and we gain wisdom. This work goes from charcoal to plastic to wax to glass.

Sometimes when I look at these photos I’m called to make I’m confused. Why am I photographing rocks?

All I can say is that I’m drawn to do it, and it looks how I feel.
