Just got back from 7 dreamy days in Crete 🌞🇬🇷

We stayed in resort town, Agia Marina, and made a couple of day trips out to Chania and Rethymno.

With incredible produce and beautiful hospitality, it was super easy to eat vegan, even with our 21-month-old 🥰

I wasn’t expecting to enjoy Agia Marina as we tend to steer away from anywhere too ”touristic” but with a toddler, convenience was key 😅 From restaurants with shaded playgrounds and beach toys to fun parks along the main strip, it was just perfect.

💎 Tucked in amongst the towering brick buildings of Norra Djurgårdsstaden’s Gasverket district, is one of my favourite local gems - @matkafematarhuset

You’ll find them dishing out hearty meals, sweet treats and running frequently packed-out AW events in a beautiful industrial building from the 1800s.

I’ve been long impressed by their tasty and well-considered vegan options, and whether I’ve come here alone to work or with fam and friends to dine, I’ve always felt well looked after. So, I reached out to chat with them about why they bother putting in so much care into their plant-based alternatives - and I was kindly invited to try some of their brunch dishes! 💚

Matkafé’s restaurant manager, Simon, says he’s seen an clear, increasing need for vegan options over the past years with dietary restrictions and lifestyle changes so catering to those needs just makes sense. Also, given that they operate in the same space as a climbing gym, he and head chef, Andreas (who trained under Gordon Ramsay at The Savoy!) knew it was essential to offer nutrient-packed options like the Mätarhusets Bowl - which was developed together with a nutritionist (and happens to be Simon’s favourite 🌱 option 😄)

That said, they also offer cheeky fika options from @bagarnhornstull like their biskvi and snickers ruta 😋

And if you’d prefer something on the lighter side, they do have a lovely chia pudding or a Vegme & avocado wrap!

Whether you’re student at Berghs, working in the area, climbing at @klatterverket_gasverket or live nearby - you’ll find something you’ll love on the weekly menu or at Sunday brunch!

🍴TOP FAVES:
💚 Mätarhuset bowl: black rice, slaw, broccoli, lentils, goji berries, orange and leafy greens.
💚 Vegmesallad: smashed roasted potatoes, capers, pickled & roasted onions, tomatoes and cucumbers and generously drizzled with aioli.

The food and coffee are definitely winners, but so are the staff who show up with top tier service every time 😍

🍁🍂 Cozy season is well and truly here 🥰

While it’s tempting to just snuggle up indoors cradling a hot drink, you want to make the most of the beautiful sunlight, the gorgeous colours and the crisp air 🥹

So, here are some pitstops for a warm, hearty and plant-based fill while you’re out and about in Stockholm! 🤗

Edit:
One that I just remembered that you’ve got to have in your back pocket is @foschstockholm
- Their soup of the day (can almost always be made vegan) and grilled cheeze sandwich + pistachio kouign amann❗️Sooo good.
📍Located in Östermalm (Birger Jarlsgatan - closest 🚆 Rådmansgatan) and near Stadion.

Part 2 from our 🇦🇺 trip coming in hot!
Make sure you save this for hard hitting plant-based goodness in and around Sydney CBD 🏙️

We loved visiting old haunts as well as new spots - especially knowing that so many vegan businesses shut after the pandemic.
And as always, it was fab to see omni spots showing mad plant-based love 🫶

It’s been a minute 🫣 But with good reason, I promise! You’ll want to save this if you’re traveling down under 🦘🇦🇺

We headed back to Sydney recently and enjoyed tonnes of delicious quality time with fam and friends, and of course I’m not going to gatekeep the good stuff.

Everything we know and love about Sydney’s food scene comes from the mouthwatering melting pot of its suburbs. So, rather than your typical city centre list (that’s coming dw 🤗), let’s start there!

If you’re in town for a longer stay or live locally and haven’t done much exploring beyond the CBD, this is your sign to get moving 💨

*Not all exclusively vegan - but that’s part of the excitement! So happy to see more and more restaurants offering substantial & creative plant-based, options 💚

💐 Mors dag brunch 🥰
📍ÖUR | @restaurangour - Stockholm, Gamla Stan

Consider my socks blasted off 🤯

With every interior detail, conversation with staff, morsel of food and sip of a drink, it’s clear that this restaurant is a labour of deep love and immense skill.

Whether you eat plant-based or not, this Northern Swedish gem is an absolute must-visit! Can’t wait to come back and work my way through the regular menu (and mocktails) 😍 Bravo @vegandrea & team 👏

Taste the best of Himalayas right here in Stockholm at @rara_restaurant_bar 🤩

Each dish here truly is a delight for the senses with beautifully presented plates, lovingly layered with a vibrant blend of flavours 🥰

From the momos, to the noodles, to the Asian-inspired cocktail syrups - it’s all made carefully from scratch, in-house 😍

For the owner of rara, offering a range of exciting and substantial vegan options is to be inclusive and ensure that everyone feels welcome at their restaurant. Allergies and dietary requirements are always handled with the utmost care and consideration, and they’re even working hard to nail a recipe for gluten-free momos!

They believe that vegan food is all about bringing people together - and proving that it can be just as creative and delicious! 💚🥰

In the coming weeks, we can also expect new additions for their spring menu including a mango salad and another additional tofu dish 🙌🌞

🌟A fun take on the classic semla with more of a caramelly taste and a solid crunch

Though semla season seems to start earlier every year, the traditional day for indulging (as purists will tell you) in the iconic fluffy, creamy, almond-y, cardamom-my delight is coming around the bend! If you’ve committed to waiting or just haven’t gotten around to it, here’s where you can enjoy the best 🌱 ones in Stockholm:

Mr. Cake | @mrcake
📍 Tekniska Högskolan & Hötorget
🌟 Generous with the almond filling with a slight caramel taste. Surprisingly good plant-based option given that they only offer one alternative for the rest of the year 😅

Socker Sucker | @sockersucker
📍Rådmansgatan
🌟 Stunning presentation and a lovely bun. Plus points for great service. Expect lines and possibly a tight squeeze.

Söderbergs Bageri | @soderbergsbageri
📍Telefonplan
🌟 Huge, well-balanced classic semla but also offer several variations including ”semmelmunk”, pistachio semla and semlabiskvi at certain times during the season. Definitely the most innovative in town!
*Only just learned that they have a cafe with seating at Telefabriken, would definitely recommend going there instead as it gets cramped and a bit stressful at the Cedergrensvägen if you want to browse at the options.

Gunnarssons | @gunnarsonskonditori
📍 Skanstull
🏆 They offer the traditional hetvägg serving - my fave way to have it. Another big semla with a delightful balance between bun, cream and filling. Wonderful service to boot 🙌

Hoping to get to these before the season ends:
@kafeplattansthlm
@bageripassion
@robindelseliusbageri
@asobageri

Are there any I’ve missed? 🤔

While I’m not huge on Valentines (or Palentines), I do love a date night 💃🏻

If you’re looking to treat someone special to an intimate, dimly-lit dinner, here are my current top 5 picks with solid vegan options:

💚 Rosetta’s | @rosettassthlm
60/70s LA decor meets plant-based soul food (all vegan except for mussel & oyster dishes). Chill, sultry vibes with a smooth & decedent palate. Loved the service and commitment to the occasion last year 💘
💰~200kr per main
📍Hornstull

❤️ Tengu | @restotengu
Casual ramen eatery meets chic Scandinavian dining room. Dishes & cocktails made with precision and finesse to match the decor (I’m obsessed with the @flos lamps). Omni, not strictly plant-based. Not my absolute fave vegan ramen in town, but my top for date night!
💰~200kr per main
📍Tekniska Högskolan

💚 Växthuset | @restaurangvaxthuset
Another stylish Scandinavian home-type of vibe but this one turns into a club in the later hours. This Stockholm plant-based institution is a must if you’re looking for a fine dining option.
💰7-course tasting menu: 850kr, 5-course menu of the chef’s choice: 680kr
📍Skanstull

❤️ Brasserie Godot | @brasseriegodot
Modern French dining in a seemingly minimal space but with delightfully wild art blended in when you take a closer look. Not at all plant-based but their vegan options are expertly executed! Very impressed.
💰 ~350kr per main
📍Östermalm

❤️ Brutalisten | @brutalisten
One of the most unique and outrageous (in a good oe bad way? depends on you) dining experiences I’ve ever had. Definitely a choice if you’re going ultra special. Not exclusively veegz.
💰1200 or 1600 depending on menu
📍Hötorget

🌱 Part 3 of 3: #veganuary is over but it isn’t too late to share my final top reason for becoming/staying vegan, which is to reduce my carbon footprint 🌏

I know that going veegz alone won’t stop or reverse this, nor am I the perfect consumer when I shop or manage my household waste (trying 🥲). However, when you’re already conscious about what you eat for the sake of animals and your own health, it does help you feel a bit better after doomscrolling that your choices at least help to lighten your load.

I hope that sharing these reasons might encourage you to at least try to eat more plant-based beyond Veganuary if you don’t already do - and if you do, I hope it helps you feel more hopeful and motivated during tough times.

I’m keen to share more of my thoughts and tips throughout the year, to experiment with recipes and perhaps share some vegan lifestyle tips beyond the plate ☺️ If there’s anything that’s resonated with you or made you wonder, I’d love to know! 💚

🌱 Part 2 of 3: My second reason for going veegz (or initially, vegetarian) is a lot more selfish. I don’t pretend that choosing this diet / lifestyle is a purely selfless pursuit - the truth is, one of the most important deciding factors was how I felt physically. I wouldn’t have stayed the course if I felt unwell.

After gradually becoming vegetarian, I found there were several significant positive physical benefits - mainly: less eczema flare ups, less bloating, less weight fluctuation, I felt less hungry and ”lighter” after meals, and felt that I had more & longer lasting energy.

As someone who spent most of their life playing sport and being a martial arts instructor for over 8 years, plus having a family history of high blood pressure, diabetes & cardiovascular issues, being healthy and feeling relatively strong is important to me and at the time, I felt that this was the healthiest diet I’d ever had.

Becoming vegan wasn’t as straightforward. I had to be aware of the calorie intake and density of each meal to make up for the components that I was now cutting out. After a couple of weeks, I learned how to better incorporate whole foods, and it became much easier. Again, I felt new burst of energy and I was convinced that this was definitely an improvement for me 💪

Of course, it’s not as easy for everyone - you may have a medical obstacle to being able to sustain a vegan diet but if you can and are curious, I hope you give it a good go!

Captured:
1 & 2 - Soup curry in Sapporo and a shojin ryori meal served at a temple on Mt. Koya during our first trip primarily eating vegan
3 - My favourite vegan buffet in Stockholm (for food & views): @hermans_givepeasachance
