After a successful first screening of our audiovisual installation “Everyday Blackness” back in May, we’re looking forward to finally welcome you to @kunstmuseumbasel again for a second iteration, taking place on Thursday, September 5.

“Everyday Blackness” is a mesmerizing blend of sounds, voices, and polyrhythmic music and visuals, exploring everyday life from an Afro-diasporic perspective, narrated by Basel-based OKRA Collective and collaborators. At the basis of the work are conversations about navigating everchanging environments that feel increasingly tense, but also about communing and how to be genuinely and authentically present with each other.

The evening will start with an introduction, where we will delve into the artistic process behind the installation. Following the talk, we will screen the installation. To close out the night, there will be a bar and space for networking, allowing everyone to connect, share insights, and simply enjoy being together.

Take note that this event will take place at Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart, St. Alban-Rheinweg 60, 4052 Basel. We’re looking forward to sharing this evening with you🩷🩷

„Everyday Blackness” is an audiovisual installation commissioned by @kunstmuseumbasel for the framework programme of their upcoming exhibition titled “When We See Us”. The installation is a sonic and visual glimpse into everyday Black life, narrated through different mediums by Basel-based OKRA Collective and collaborators.
They engage with questions speaking to what the world looks like through their respective lenses.
At the basis of this work are conversations about navigating everchanging environments that feel increasingly tense, but also about communing and how to be genuinely and authentically present with each other.

The contemporary art space La Rada, with the new exhibition series Onde di sé, will inaugurate on Saturday, September 28th, the exhibition An Elusive Elsewhere, organized by Deiara and Rafael Kouto. An Elusive Elsewhere features installations by Adji Dieye, Ayomide Tejuoso Plantation, Okra Collective, and Pablo Rezzonico Bongcam. The title of the exhibition describes the condition of people living the experience of the diaspora, who embark on identity and geographical belonging research due to their roots, confronting thus a migratory past, and the concepts of nationality and authenticity.
An Elusive Elsewhere therefore explores the condition of people from a diaspora, who belong to multiple places and, at the same time, to none. This collective exhibition seeks, through visual arts, installations, and sound, to give space to artists with a migration background, who speak of this fragmentation of places and voices and discuss their relationship with identity. Starting from the collective dimension and moving to a more personal and intimate one, the reality of living in multiple cultures simultaneously is depicted through objects tied to memories. The project sees the collaboration of @luminanza_reattore , an association that promotes contemporary Swiss playwriting in Italian. The participants, Chiara Gallo and Marzio Gandola, wrote the texts and engaged with the artworks personally, creating an authorial path within the exhibition context. taken in Locarno, Switzerland by @_weareokra_

Yuck Miranda: GAYisa ⚡

GAYisa is based on archival research in South Africa and Mozambique as well as on documents from the Basel Africa Bibliographies, and combines sound, images, and narratives into a rich audiovisual experience.

Yuck Miranda brings to light homoaffective relationships and survival strategies that emerged in the shafts and mining environments of South Africa. Together with musician Mbalango, dancers João Felisberto Armando and Hélio Arnaldo from Maputo, and the OKRA Collective from Basel, this repressed knowledge is brought to the stage in a documentary performance—in Portuguese as well as in Changana and Tsonga, languages from southern Mozambique.
