We’re thrilled to announce that Mirage Blue has been selected to be screened at the International Experimental Film Festival in Athens next month by @instituteartgreece. The collaborative film, which was shown as a video installation @whatiftheworld_gallery incorporates the artworks and extends the critical inquiries of Smith’s sculptural exhibition A Deixis in Folds (2024). The film centres around a fictitious board game as image economies are playfully stretched across alternate realities and the threads of aesthetic regimes are pulled through space and time unraveling like a web of plastic spaghetti.

We are grateful to the cast and crew who helped to make this film 🩵

The Backrooms has been on my mind so much since I watched it. Lodged like a chair half submerged in a carpeted floor (or sunken in a pond, or caught in a window pane). A mutating reality built from generic repetitive spaces, laced with the fear of being stuck. It reminded me of the silent hallways in an abandoned hot spring resort in Japan (2023). What makes Backrooms so scary is that its world shows no decay, no encroaching nature, no story, history is muted. Its lure is purely mental, constructed. In the real world a weirdly vacant room overgrown with moss still carries the tantalising potential of change, of a future. Both are scary because when you walk in you don’t know what or who got there before you, and might be waiting. by @_wendingmachine_
