DRUNKEN EPIPHANIES — SESSION 4

This session turns to one of the most debated cultural projects in Düsseldorf: the future of the opera.

Over the past years, plans for a new opera house have sparked discussions about architecture, urban development, public spending, cultural policy, and the role of major cultural institutions in contemporary cities. Following the recent suspension of the project, many of these questions remain open.

To explore the debate, we will read and discuss two articles approaching the issue from different perspectives.

We are especially pleased to welcome Lavinia Dames, soprano at Deutsche Oper am Rhein, who will join the conversation and share insights from within the institution at the center of this discussion.

Mauricio Limón de León is participating in Football & Art. A Shared Emotion, on view from 28 March – 26 July 2026 at Museo Jumex, Mexico City.

Mauricio presents Política Deportiva (2014), a 5-minute HD video developed through his long-term collaboration with La Flama and El Gordo. The work unfolds on a football field in Iztapalapa, Mexico City, where family members and friends participate in a subtle yet powerful performance.

Through a simple inversion of the game’s conventions, Mauricio creates a work with surrealist qualities, set in a space that straddles the city’s outskirts and the urban landscape itself. The naturalness with which the participants act shows how Mauricio creates not only a work of art, but also a form of social reconciliation—without allowing those relationships to become ideologized.

Nach unserer letzten Sitzung zur Zukunft der Oper laden wir euch herzlich ein, das Gespräch gemeinsam mit Lavinia Dames und Alexandra Meffert fortzusetzen.

Die Debatte um das Opernhaus ist mehr als eine Diskussion über ein Gebäude. Sie eröffnet die Chance, grundsätzliche Fragen zu stellen: Welche Kulturpolitik wünschen wir uns für Düsseldorf?

Rachel Libeskind’s solo exhibition features previously unseen large-format collages.

The current exhibition takes its title from Shakespeare’s Sonnet 59, which explores how the new can emerge from tradition and how invention continues to fascinate, even though there is “nothing new under the sun.”

Rachel Libeskind’s artistic practice restores the act of looking as a way of making meaning in a world that generates 600,000 images every second. Through the archive and an elegy of the mundane, her work recaptures the force of images that have already circulated but continue to fascinate us.

11 years ago, I had the privilege to accompany the acquisition process of this beautiful work by #DanielBuren through #JorgeSanguino and #HilarioGalguera @galeriahilariogalguera to the @staedelmuseum . It was fantastic to see it again installed in Frankfurt, an international voice in their collection. taken in Städel Museum by @_wildpalms_

The exhibition brings together new voices in contemporary German painting, tracing different approaches to image-making today: from drawing as a compositional structure, to ornamental and spatial systems, to painterly atmospheres shaped by memory, materiality and perception.

Seen together, these works point to a renewed sensitivity in painting: slower, more deliberate, and attentive to the tension between surface, line and space.

As preparation for the opening of @manifestabiennial on June 21, our next reading group will focus on two texts that examine the history, ambitions, and contradictions of the European nomadic biennial.

Founded in the aftermath of the Cold War, Manifesta has positioned itself as a platform for cultural dialogue, urban transformation, and European integration. Yet it has also generated ongoing debates about regeneration, political instrumentalization, and the role of contemporary art within changing social landscapes.

Before the exhibition opens across the Ruhr region, we invite you to read and discuss these questions with us.
