Here’s what’s coming up this month at XCHC⬩➤⬩➤⬩➤

Friday, Oct 2 // Slow Motion presents: Harry Charles (live). Someone on the dancefloor at our last event said it best: every track is what usually gets played at the end of the night. End of night tracks all night long. That’s a big part of the DNA of Slow Motion events. Beautiful, fluffy music, without any sharp edges. Like a warm and cozy hug.

Saturday, Oct 3 // Sound Salad ft. Nikki Lucas, DoughBoy, Oliver Prince b2b Sano, Noise Section. For the first time in years, Sound Salad is well due and psyched to be putting on our own night. We have a most wicked lineup featuring some of the best underground live music and vinyl selectors to be found for this evening, all to be brought to your ears through the Wheke Sound rig.

Sunday, Oct 4 // XCHC Community Potluck! On the first Sunday of each month, we’ll be gathering and sharing kai with our XCHC community, welcoming curious newcomers, prospective volunteers, and anyone who’s simply keen to share some kai and spend time with good people.

Monday, Oct 5 // Join us for an evening of live music & poetry at our new Open Mic Night! This event is about bringing live music back to a creative space that means a lot to our community. A new team is working hard to keep this venue alive and we’d love to fill it with songs, stories and lovely people.

Wednesday, Oct 7 // Yoga with Danny, followed by Dance Temple - an ecstatic dance experience. We will be dancing with David Juno on the decks and lightly facilitating. Come join us for a conscious weekday dance on our carpeted and heated dancefloor.

The Weka is a flightless bird native to Aotearoa (New Zealand) infamous among local outdoorsmen for pilfering your snacks and scuttling back into the bush when you’re not looking.
Weka Tek is the pseudonym of electronic artist Brendan Evans (of the same geography), who will always ask politely before he takes a crisp.

Known for a distinct hybrid fusion of techno, psychedelic, and dubbed-out frequencies that
sound like they emerged from the bush—Weka Tek blends synthesised rhythms with ambient textures to evoke the rich, immersive qualities of Aotearoa’s untamed landscapes.

Based in Ōtautahi, Weka Tek’s music captures a distinctive auditory experience that embodies both the pristine surroundings and a modern, forward-thinking approach to music—mindfully refining elements to bathe your synapses in an undulating continuum of sound that’ll have you stepping like a weka with some fresh campsite loot. Weka Tek’s work transitions seamlessly between reflective armchair-listening and dynamic dance-floor energy—offering a versatile sound that can shape-shift and resonate in various settings.

Weka Tek has earned acclaim through releases on esteemed labels such as Mindscape records, Dub Communication, M45, and Kosa Records. Notable
remixes for Techgnosis Records, Merkaba Music, and Dubmission Records further highlight their originality and depth in the music scene.
With an exciting array of new releases and live shows on the horizon, Weka Tek is set to continue exploring and capturing the essence of Aotearoa’s bush and
natural world through sound, all while redeeming the good name of our mischievous flightless bird. by @_xchc

Join the crew!

As XCHC moves into its next phase, we’re looking for a few people who’d like to take a bit more ownership in some specific areas of the kaupapa.

FINANCE
Help us keep the numbers making sense and support the financial side of XCHC, from budgeting and tracking to payments and general finance admin.

VOLUNTEER COORDINATION
Help us welcome, connect and support our volunteers, and make it easier for people to find their way into the community and get involved.

TECHNICAL PRODUCTION
Got experience with sound, lighting, staging or event tech? We’re looking for someone who can help coordinate the technical side of our events and support artists and performers.

EVENTS
Help bring XCHC events to life, from planning and logistics through to coordinating things on the day, setup and pack-down, and helping create a good experience for everyone involved.

You don’t need to have done exactly this before. We’re interested in people who have relevant skills, curiosity, reliability and a willingness to muck in.

If one of these sounds like your kind of thing, fill out our volunteer form and let us know what you’re interested in, what you bring, and how much time you have available.

A few years ago, as a young lad, I moved up to Te Whanganui-a-Tara for university. I soon discovered Club 121 and began frequenting it every weekend. Throughout my first year I was introduced to the many different styles of electronic dance music, largely thanks to the excellent programming at Club 121 by Cameron Morris. A wide variety of house and techno, including regular international guests, was the norm! The many nights spent in the basement fostered my love for dancing and music, which now takes up a large part of my life.

Between 121 Festival, Club 121 and Shipwrecked, Cameron Morris has played a pivotal role in the New Zealand dance music scene in recent years. In that time he has also built an excellent music collection. I’m thrilled to bring him down to Ōtautahi for a night of tribal house, dub techno and atmospheric, heads down music. We’ll be dancing at the Exchange with a big sound system and dim red lighting.

Tickets in the bio.

Join us for Imagine Sessions #1! 😍🎶

We are starting a new series of live music evenings, curated & organised by the team behind our cosy open mics. The goal is to create a space where people come to really listen. A room that gets quiet when the music starts. No bar chatter, no phones out, no one talking over the artists. Just the thing that makes these gigs feel different: we’re all here for the music.

Each session will feature a carefully curated line-up of artists. For our first session, we’re heading into indie/folk territory with Just Janie, Finley Passmore & Lucy. Get ready for beautiful songs, stripped-back performances & an intimate atmosphere.

What to expect:

🎶 A line up of incredible local artists
🫠 A mix of couches, chairs and floor seating
🍹 A bar with drinks and small bites
🧸 For an extra cosy evening, bring your own cushion

Doors at 7pm, music starts at 7:30pm. Tickets in bio 🎟️ taken in Exchange Christchurch - XCHC by @_xchc

October is here, and it’s time to kick off our twice monthly Dance Temple events!✨

On Wednesday Oct 7th we will be dancing with David Juno on the decks again and lightly facilitating. Come join us for a conscious weekday dance on our carpeted dancefloor! 😍

Before Dance Temple, there is a flow yoga session from 5:45-6:45pm, hosted by Danny. It’s koha, and the perfect match with the dance afterwards if you want to come for both.

[TICKETS]: door only, sliding scale $18-30
[CAPACITY]: limited to 40 people - Please arrive early to secure your spot

Dance Temple is a freeform movement journey: a gently guided ecstatic dance experience. 🤩

It is a co-created space for our community, where all bodies are welcome. The journey is gently facilitated and curated by our team, with an epic live DJ to get us grooving.
We dance for connection, we dance to play, we dance to be free.

We dance to feel, to move with all aspects of ourselves, welcoming the waves and all.
We dance to our joy and to our sorrow. We dance to come home.
We know that music and movement are powerful portals to expression, it is medicine for our bodies and souls.
This space is our temple - we show up as we are, in all our perfect imperfections.
We dance sober, silently (without words) and shoeless. ✨

All are welcome, regardless of race, identity, age, gender, beliefs, religion etc
We realise that not everyone has access to the same finances or resources; if these are barriers for you, please reach out to us!
If you have ample finances or resources, please consider offering some koha to help combat the disparities in our community so we can all have access to the same privileges.
We look forward to welcoming you to the dancefloor.

Big love,

Got plans Sunday evening? Now you do!

We’re having our monthly XCHC potluck and we’d love to see you there. Bring something to share, or just bring yourself.

Whether you’ve been part of XCHC for years, haven’t been around in a while, have only just discovered us, or are completely new to the space, you’re welcome.
Come along, eat some kai and hang out with some good humans.

And if you want to settle in a little earlier, there’s open creative co-working for the two hours before potluck. Bring whatever you’re working on and make yourself at home.

First Sunday of every month. Everyone welcome.
