I took @newbalance & @hypebeast through baltimore to show some of my favorite spots in the city. Baltimore and the classic 990’s is a true love story. 990’s have always kept us stylish, comfortable, and chic. Whether we outside Twelve-O-Clocking, traveling from neighborhood to neighborhood, tew stepping or crazy legging, watching the marching bands strut through the hood, voguing using the city streets as our runway, or eating a dozen or two of crabs, we stay laced in our 990’s. I personally watched my OG’s wear them, and then myself started rocking them and haven’t stopped. 990’s is especially my go to when I’m getting a chai at good neighbor, making brooms at station north tool kit library, or reading old ArtForums in the stacks of the library. Kindred at Play, exploring Blackness, and play, and eroticism, and death, and spirit, and sex, and care, and tradition, and taboos, and desire, and labor, and ritual, and curiosities, and contradictions, and fu*king, and being, and persevering, and exploring, and imagining, and seeing, and feeling, and transcending, and near death, and ecstasies, and solitude, and camaraderie, and magic; Kindred at Play offers no singular definition of eroticism. Instead, it invites readers into a constellation of voices and gestures that treat intimacy as something always lived and always Black.

What began as a series of frantic texts while riding the train and daydreaming out the window in the backseat of a shared Uber, grew into phone calls and lots of dropped calls from the subway, plus last-minute emails past working hours as I invited lovers, friends, and collaborators to contribute to Kindred at Play, volume 1.

Together, these contributions consider how aesthetics, play, traditions and taboos continue to animate Black folk life and erotic imagination. It is a language through which intimacy is communal, histories are carried, and eroticism continues to be not only expressed, but also expansive.

This summer I finished series of monoprint lithographs with chine collé, each 1/1, along with five artist’s proofs. While the stone preserved the composition and ink, the chine collé added many possibilities for spontaneity and intuition allowing each pull and print to be distinctive and singular.

The paper allowed me to reconfigure the composition and explore feeling and instincts with color, shapes, cut outs, sometimes spot layering depending on the color and the mark.

Also a very laborious process with lots of detail and problems to solve. by @_yoshann

I’m still sitting with this work. It’s taken years to think through, and I’m still finding language for it. Looking back at my journal, what continues to move me is Fred Moten’s proposition that “Blackness is X.”

Fred Moten reprise, B-29 Paper Target, camcorder, composite cables, mkv to mp4, 4:08, 2023-2026

Fred Moten Reprise is, for me, the most visually compelling of the videos. Color moves through shifting textures as the X becomes a drawing tool, animating the screen frame by frame. The target appears to both run and chase at the same time. It feels as though it is swallowing me, refusing capture while continuing to persist and take shape.

Fred Moten, B-29 Paper Target, camcorder, composite cables, mkv to mp4, 1:54, 2023-2026

Fred Moten Chopped and Screwed, B-29 Paper Target, camcorder, composite cables, mkv to mp4, 1:39, 2023-2026

Fred Moten Chopped and Screwed is fragmented, stretched, and slowed down. The frames unfold as a slow burn, allowing abstraction gradually. Like DJ Screw’s practice of chopping and screwing music, the slowed pace reshapes time differently.

I understand this as Blackness refusing to be fully captured by definition or fixed identity. It is a force that continually disrupts, escaping confinement and resisting closure. Blackness becomes an object only when it can be measured, possessed, represented, or owned.

In these video works, Blackness is X: ongoing, always moving, becoming, emerging, and transforming. The X degrades and struggles against the material tension of the video itself, constantly reshaping texture and form. At times, I feel like I am the X within these videos. by @_yoshann
