Our (Un)Common Scholars Community Symposium was an absolute blast—thanks to you! 🎉

Last Saturday, we explored Baltimore photography with the understanding that knowledge about photography and about Baltimore lives in so many kinds of people. We heard from artists, scholars, and community voices, including a special closing keynote featuring renowned curator Dr. Deborah Willis (@debwillisphoto) and Dr. Carla Hayden, 14th Librarian of Congress.

Amy Sherald is a tough act to follow. Throughout a 22-week run at the Baltimore Museum of Art earlier this year, 80,000 people stood before the canvases of Sherald’s exhibition, ‘American Sublime,’ marking the institution’s highest attendance this century.

But this fall’s lineup proves that landmark success was more than just luck—that the BMA is generating its own momentum, and that it might just be at the top of its game.

Now on view through February 2027, ‘Flashback’ is a rich portrait of this town, considering the ways in which photography not only records history but shapes it. Co-curated by the BMA’s curator of prints, drawings and photographs Leslie Cozzi and assistant curator of contemporary art Antoinette Roberts—with an assist from an advisory panel that includes heavyweight cultural historians like ‘True Laurels’’ Lawrence Burney, Afro Charities Deyane Moses, and Angela N. Carroll—it is a vital archive that adds new weight to its already historic creative legacy.

HAPPY LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH AND BLAQ PRIDE, AND NEW HISTORY NIGHT… In Baltimore, October isn’t just #lgbtqhistorymonth, it’s also @bmoreblaqpride , and it couldn’t be more fitting: from its earliest days, the LGBTQ+ movement in Baltimore has been led by incredible Black queer activists.

Not only were the precursors to modern groups like @pridecenterofmd and @freestatejustice led by Black queer people at a time when the gay and lesbian rights groups elsewhere were overwhelmingly led by white men, trailblazing groups like the National Coalition of Black Lesbians and Gays were started in Maryland, Black queer activists led the way in AIDS activism and awareness, and were leaders in LGBTQ+ religious groups.

You can read about it online in Zine 6, but I’ll be going more into it on NOV 5 at @theclubcarbaltimore at 7PM celebrating a new reel from SHAN Wallace’s incredible GLORY DAYS and a new zine about Black queer activism and nightlife. Come on by!

I am delighted to announce the inclusion of two of my photographs in In Light and Verse, a book created by the Bmore Art team, featuring portfolios from 40 of Baltimore’s best photographers and lens-based artists and 34 nationally acclaimed poets. The book, scheduled for distribution in late November, will feature two photographs that appeared in my solo exhibit New Generations: the Photography of Three Cities and Two Eras, the Creative Alliance, Baltimore, MD, 2022.

Congratulations to all of the artists, photographers, and poets, whose work will appear in In Light and Verse.

Scenes from the True Laurels table this past weekend at Printed Matter’s New York Art Book Fair 2026. The NYABF was one my first chances to showcase True Laurels to the wider world when I was just starting out years ago and it felt great to return with older work (including a reprint of the first zine I ever made in 2013) and what I’ve been up to post-pandemic. Reunited with old friends. Met some internet friends for the first time and made plenty new ones. Much love to everyone who came by to shop, trade work, or just have nice conversation. And special shoutout to all my Baltimore/DMV folks who I connected with. Felt great to represent the urrea. Good times! 🦀🗣️❤️
