Exam analysis: steps forward 🧐📊

Numbers tell a story and this week we dived deep into ours.

We broke down our results as a school, nationally, and vs other AQA centres, with question-level analysis, examiner reports and live data on strengths & areas for development.

Key reminder: GCSEs are a 5-year journey. This work is for our current Y10 & Y11.

That sparked a rich discussion on KS3 and how we embed skills earlier and more explicitly.

*What’s changing this year?*

✨ Teaching poems in pairs + 45 non-negotiable quotes across the 15
✨ A clear, consistent approach to Lang P1 Q4 and Q5, a departmental baseline structure for all literature text and questioned how our booklets build true independence.

The team found it refreshing, honest and useful which is exactly what we wanted and what I planned .

This is art!

It’s amazing to see how much you can analyse a quote!

It’s rich to see the annotations and the process of modelling!

It is a transformative experience using the visualiser and seeing students emersed into the work and the step by step process.

Watching learning happening and rich discussions unfolding is nothing short but gold dust to say the least!

When revising literature it is important to provide key intentions and quotations that students can use regardless of the question that comes up during the exams.

This enables them to carry the cargo which maximises their opportunities of succeeding.

These ideas given to them were in preparation for a walking talking mock exam based around the theme of the supernatural.

However students can use these ideas for questions around : fear, ambition, kingship etc

The aim is to retrieve and adapt!

Last years morning interventions pushed students from grade 3s to grade 6s and helped secured some of our grade 9s.

With a clear focus on:

- Formula and approaches to key questions in the language paper ( clear focus on larger and more technical questions)
- Revision of transferable quotes which you can use across multiple themes and characters for literature
- Break down of AOs
- Intentional use of ambitious vocabulary
- Understanding the importance of analysis and writers intent

NB: this doesn’t replace high quality teaching nor the need to challenge students as soon as they come into year 7. But it identified and stretched our grade climbers.

We have kick started it off earlier this year and the kids are ready to go!

In the midst of new systems, new classrooms, new year 7s and new staff it has been amazing to see our current year 11s come in with a mindset ready to learn.

What we will be doing again or introducing for this cohort:

📚Weekly times pieces

Every week students sat an exam question either literature or language and were given the opportunity to fix a paragraph after personalised / whole class feedback was provided. This year we will be including possible predictions for all papers so students have ready made essays of the question did come up. If not they would have mastered the skills and built undeniable stamina. Prior we deliver a walking talking mock lesson which includes: model answers, opportunities to create a paragraph together, rich vocabulary and clear success criteria’s and approaches.

📚 Journey to June booklet 2027

A bitesize revision plan for students from now to June which factors in a clear focus on all questions for both lang and literature and methods to revise them. Away from homework eager students have something to always work on from now. Parents and guardians were also informed about this during our recent amazing y11 parental consultation.

📚 Targetted and imminent feedback and Targetted interventions

Last year our doors were open and students brought completed past papers / key questions to get marked, get feedback and get better. It was incredible to see this cohort already bringing this in on the FIRST DAY back! Targetted interventions remain a secondary solution to high quality teaching in class however our intervention plan has already been shared with our teachers. Their mock exams last year has given us a brief idea of their gaps so we will begin assisting them from now and not fire fight at the last minute.

The start of the new academic year can be daunting and exciting !

This time last week I had the honour and undeniable privilege to deliver a teaching at an incredible and power packed Back to school service for children of all ages and their parents / guardians.

Many were transitioning from primary to secondary, secondary to college, college to university or simply going to a new year.

All needed a WORD.

I gave them 10 key principles for a successful year ahead with tangible examples - stay tuned for the full clip!

It’s imperative we are equipped for the year ahead, challenge ourselves, thirst for knowledge and be a force.

It was sooo exciting in addition seeing young people graduate from biblical academies from all over the world!🥹

With my robust framework this becomes a minimum for students!

Maisie was no different

Through repetitive strategies and mastering of key formulas Maisie saw her level of analysis developing consistently.

Her ability to provide alternative interpretations, relevant and unique context enabled her to go to greater heights in her PETAL paragraphs. In addition her one word analysis and linking it back to what the reader thinks, feels or understands with clear writers intention implemented set her apart.

She got ahead through understanding what was holding her back through intense scrutiny and imminent feedback with an opportunity to fix it.

Looking forward to the students this academic year 🎉🎉🎉
