For a long time, I’ve felt the desire to create something that goes beyond traditional music lessons.

Not just teaching scales, theory, or technique —
but helping musicians navigate creativity, career, identity, burnout, confidence, versatility, and building a sustainable life in music.

Over the past decade+, I’ve been lucky enough to tour internationally, perform on massive stages, produce records, teach students of all levels, and help build creative communities through projects like Beardfest.

Through all of it, one thing has become very clear to me:

A lot of musicians are deeply talented…
but feel stuck, disconnected, overwhelmed, boxed in, or unsure how to fully grow into themselves creatively and professionally.

So I’m opening up a very small beta mentorship group to begin exploring what this could become.

this is an experiment- posting a 3+ min guitar solo video that isn’t full of fireworks n shred, but totally captures the moment and setting…and felt real good! it’s rare that i play through an “analog” rig these days and it was amazing to see what I could get out of my @loudoguitars GRT + beloved old @riveraamps Quiana and some choice pedals.

pushed/od sound is coming from a @volticelectronicdevices guy (dunno the name) and a @spiralelectricfx black fuzz. beautiful reverb and delay from @strymonengineering flint + volante.

Peep the tone and fx dynamics here! I’m constantly manipulating things like dry/wet mix of reverbs (@neuraldsp Quad Cortex), bringing in higher octaves (@digitechfx Whammy), and of course engaging overdrive when it’s time to #shred …

And on top of that I’m playing with my pickup selection, tone and volume controls on my guitar (@loudoguitars GRT Deluxe) to match what I’m playing. I’m making little tweaks almost constantly! It’s often subtle, but to me it makes a huge difference.

This is the other side of dynamics. Of course it’s imperative to learn the fundamentals of dynamics with just your instrument and your hands. If you can’t make it sound great raw, you probably can’t make it sound great with FX. But learning how to make pedals an extension of your playing can add dimension, vibe, color and immense versatility to what you do.

Yes, my husband plays guitar for Ms. Lauryn Hill. And yes, I am wildly proud of him.

But Zach’s bravest, most beautiful acts have happened far from any stage. They are the ways he keeps saying yes.

He said yes to my voice before I trusted it—hearing me sing with wonder, teaching me my first chords, and playing beside the first songs that flowed out of me.

Early in our relationship—after six years of knowing each other—one of his relatives called me “a groupie.”

I was livid.

I was already a singer, songwriter, artist, collaborator, and whole person with a calling of my own. Believing in his dream never made me less devoted to mine.

In autumn 2018, I called him from a punk house in Ohio while I was on my own musical tour. I had taken a positive pregnancy test. He did not hesitate. He said yes to becoming a father with me.

That yes became Zia.

Just weeks after I bought 100 rural acres—a future that had not necessarily been part of his map—he told me, on the same day, that he wanted to marry me and try for another child.

Those yeses became Onyx and, four years ago today, full-band improvised wedding vows at Paradise Lakes.

Then, this February, our daughter Juniper was stillborn.

Through labor, birth, and the impossible hospital hours, Zach was beside me: my husband, my cheerleader, and my doula.

We knew grief like this could tear a relationship apart. We chose to turn toward each other and strengthen ours.

We have tried. We have fucked up. We have tried again. We are still learning to support each other without disappearing; to disentangle love from codependence; and to choose each other freely.

Zach, I love your devotion to your work with Ms. Lauryn Hill. I love the dream you refused to abandon. But I do not love you because of the stages you stand on.

I love who you are on them, off them, and inside this beautiful, impossible life we keep choosing.

Four years married. Eighteen years of knowing you. Nearly sixteen years of music. Three children. More love, loss, repair, laughter, and becoming than any carousel can hold.

I will choose you again.
And again.
And again.
