Opening these weekend community murals up to participation from people of all ages is integral to the intention of the experience, and is also a slippery shuffle between structure and surrender. I'd be lying if I told you that this isn't a difficult dance!

There are moments all throughout these gatherings when someone adds something to the painting that causes me to tense up deep down! Some part of me that yearns for control feels threatened by the unexpected, and was attached to the idea that the painting might go in another direction. But time after time after time, what my mind initially labels as mistakes become happy little accidents that open up potent portals of possibility. Oftentimes, someone will plant a seed or a sketch that hours or even days later will evolve at the hands of someone else. Seeing this pattern play out repeatedly really helps me loosen my grip on whatever pesky thoughts come up along the way.

This is where the children are the true gurus in these sessions. They are excited, unafraid, confident, and quirky with a paintbrush in their hands. They have some of the wackiest ideas and also just want to have fun! I speak to so many adults who are unsure of what to paint, are convinced they're not artistic, and frozen by fear that they'll mess things up....meanwhile the kids will just step up to the plate and slap some paint any which place they like.

Finding the balance between allowing all expression while also encouraging attunement to the marks that have already been made is where the real magic happens. This piece taught me quite a bit about balancing elder discernment with youthful boldness, and I'm honored to have continued opportunities to practice this craft of collective co-creation.

September, you came in with a tornado warning and are leaving with a nor’easter and a blanket of fog. Everything in between felt a little like all three: beautiful, expansive, and moving faster than I could document.

There was our intimate outdoor Moon Bath on Homer’s village green, in partnership with Homer Center for The Arts. Then a brief, nourishing visit to Spirit Kindred Women’s Gathering: sound, an opening circle with beloved Sofia Moon, and time in the woods gathering discarded glass alongside hickory nuts and wild apples—seeds I hope to grow at home at Harmony Acres.

There was a third Thursday sound bath at the Wellness Studio in Cortland, an experimental recording day at Capture Studio in Syracuse, so much time spent at the new and ever-improving beaver dam…

There was my son’s fifth birthday, surrounded by new friends, and two happy children beginning kindergarten and second grade. So much gratitude for the people helping us feel rooted here.

And there was Harmonic Earth Gathering at Stonehedge Gardens: women’s circles, my first experience of Sufi whirling, DEEP conversations about land stewardship, and a late-night sound journey with Zach. Rain falling, a fire burning, our children asleep and friends nestled under blankets as close as they could squeeze, all of us held in sound and collective prayer.

These experiences feed everything I offer through Earthtoned: sound, ecology, connection, and spaces where we can feel more at home in ourselves and with one another.

A little quiet here. A very full life out there. 🍂

So much is brewing. Just wanted to chirp in on this last day of the month!

The first time someone suggested I needed to open my heart, I was offended. The idea that my heart wasn’t open enough—and should open further—felt appalling.

So if “opening your heart” makes you roll your eyes, shut down, run away, or reinforce every wall you’ve built, I understand.

I’ve been there.

I didn’t arrive at openness because loving came easily. I arrived through trauma, grief, abandonment, fear, and the belief that love was dangerous: that being loved required me to earn it, manage it, cling to it, or disappear inside it.

My closed heart was not a character flaw. It was intelligent protection.

Opening it has not meant abandoning discernment, tolerating harm, or merging with others until I lose myself.

One of the deepest layers of openness I’ve experienced came recently in my marriage through greater separation: loosening our codependent patterns and realizing that trust requires allowing trust in.

It meant allowing my husband to be sovereign without treating his sovereignty as a threat—and allowing myself to be sovereign without fearing it will cost me love.

That, too, is an open heart.

Not gripping. Not managing. Not making another person responsible for my safety, worth, or wholeness.

Loving them enough to belong to themselves.

Loving myself enough to belong to me.

I’m still meeting the places that believe love can disappear, that I’m too much or not enough, or that closeness requires control or self-abandonment.

Through prayer, singing every emotional color, the land, motherhood, marriage, grief, and devotion to my life, I’m learning that love is not scarce.

It has been weaponized, confused with attachment, and used to excuse possession and harm.

What I mean is something greater: an infinite, renewable force. A way of being. A frequency we return to—not because the world has proven safe, but because we’ve learned to remain rooted in ourselves.

An open heart is not an unprotected or boundaryless heart.

It is a heart strong enough to remain present without abandoning itself.

I’ve been walking toward that heart for twenty years—and really, a lifetime. I’m nowhere near finished.

And still, more and

🪶Performance and facilitator highlight! 🪶

On Saturday night, Robyn Mello and Zach LoPresti of Earthtoned will co-create a late-night sound journey through crystal singing bowls, voice, guitar, and spacious layers of resonance, guiding listeners toward the liminal threshold between the seen and unseen. Robyn is a sound practitioner, musician, ecological systems designer, facilitator, and founder of Earthtoned whose work invites deeper interconnection with self, Earth, spirit, and the more-than-human world. Zach is a multidimensional guitarist, composer, mentor, and sonic architect whose intuitive musicianship has carried him across stages around the world. As life partners and longtime creative collaborators, Robyn and Zach call in magic with the powerful field between them—where devotion, improvisation, deep listening, and a shared history become something neither could make alone. Together, they will prepare the collective for the ceremony that follows, opening a grounded, receptive space for mystery, possibility, and encounters with the more-than-human astral realm.

Robyn will also weave into the grief ceremony with intuitive sound, voice, and gentle reflection throughout the experience to help create a compassionate space for honoring loss, expressing emotion, and remembering our belonging to one another and the living world

🌲Dreaming Into Land with Robyn Mello: Stewardship, Vision & Right Relationship🌲

Owning land begins long before signing a deed. Through storytelling, practical guidance, guided reflection, and ecological wisdom, we’ll explore how to cultivate a reciprocal relationship with the Earth while taking tangible steps toward stewardship—whether your dream is a backyard garden, a community space, or one hundred acres.

This workshop combines storytelling, guided reflection, practical planning, ecological observation, conversation, and visioning to help participants move from vague longing toward meaningful action.

You’ll leave this workshop with practical ideas for your next steps, new ways of listening to the living world around you, and a renewed understanding
