The Classic Boys🤵🏾

Based on photograph taken in 1941 by photographer Russel Lee. It showcases five Chicago boys, dressed in suits. I wanted to showcase the evolution of style black men (boys) have shown throughout the years. Thank y’all for your patience. I’ll be posting more consistently, thank ya💜~ZZAJ

Through color, imagery, and emotion, Jazz explores the African American experience through her own lens, capturing the beauty, complexity, and stories within everyday life. She Ain’t You
(poem by ZZAJ)

Comparison is the thief of joy
But when it comes to the past
Old heartaches and old sadness
Our minds seem to enjoy
“I remember when she…”
“It’s like she could never see-“
But in the back of my mind all I could think about was
“What about me?”
Now we’re both thinking about she
“I hope this doesn’t remind him of what used to be”
My head keeps playing tricks,
“Does he really want me?”
“Does he think about we?”
Or “Am I just a phase before you both meet again?”
I can’t compare to what was had
Not with all that history, good or bad
A love you’ll never replace
Just sad I couldn’t enjoy you, like you enjoyed your last
I can’t compare to who you want me to be
Because in all honesty you want the past,
Just wrapped up in me
But now I realize we can never be,
If I’m always trapped in the shadows of she

Lose/Lose

My mind is racing,
Tripping over thoughts I can’t outrun
Still losing this same game,
When will I win one?
Praying you’ll be different,
The same prayer I gave away before.
But it seems defeat knows my address,
Showing up at my door.
I can’t help but wonder…
Do I give in?
Do I wait?
Is this love?
Or just another lesson dressed as fate?
If so, my heart needs a break.
I want to be chosen,
not almost, not sometimes.
But maybe this isn’t a battle of mine,
Just a mirror telling me to look within.
So I hold onto today, let the past fall behind.
Maybe one day I’ll hear those sounds of forever.
Until then,
I sit with the echoes
of what couldn’t stay.
Fantasizing on what was never.
