Thirteen years ago I painted my first mural for Chapter 9 Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Detroit. A Nurses Tribute.

The job was passed to me by my late Mentor & friend Gilda Snowden 💜who believed in me when I was a nervous & lost kid.

She taught me the value of community & honoring my word no matter what , and the importance of those words in the Detroit Art Community - to not only connect us to people & opportunities but also how they show who we are, and inform our Artwork.

She taught me a lot of things, and effortlessly reminded me of the profound magic in ordinary normal things, in mark making, and the magic in accidents.

Since then I have painted over 290+ murals & am still a full-time Artist painting all around MetroDetroit for public, Private, & corporate businesses, schools, restaurants, and non-profits.

Thank you Gilda 🙏 taken in Detroit, Michigan by @a.l.wrk

I am overjoyed & Honored to have contributed to OCA’s Awards Gala for impactful leaders in the Detroit Asian American Community.

@ocanational honored six impactful leaders at their 2026 Gala, each of whom have been putting in incredible meaningful work to benefit Detroit, AANHPI identities, and our legacies.

The OCA are Asian Pacific American Advocates.
A civil rights non-profit advocacy organization with chapters around the world, including Detroit.

From OCA:
This year’s theme, “Motown Momentum: Igniting New Energy, Inspiring All Generations,” reflects OCA’s commitment to empowering the next generation of leaders while honoring the rich legacy of organizing and resilience rooted in Detroit. From labor movements to cultural innovation, Detroit has long been a city where community power fuels lasting change.

“We are excited to bring the AANHPI community together in Detroit, a city with a long history of social activism and cultural innovation,” said Thu Nguyen, Executive Director of OCA - Asian Pacific American Advocates. “This year’s conference will spotlight leadership, activism, and the critical role of intergenerational partnerships in shaping a vibrant future.”

Thank you @namiraesq for sharing this with me!!!🙏
