A handful of photos from my thesis work back in April, installed at UCLA’s New Wight gallery.

Invisible Landscapes
(NWG41626)

Five-channel network of autonomously tuning robotic radio systems produced from converted kitchen items and grocery recycling. Responsive to the conditions of each site, ambient electromagnetic frequencies are channeled, mediated, and amplified through arrangements of discarded containers, packaging, and household items adapted into crude electrical circuitry. The technology comes from appropriations of early electrical patents underlying the first semiconductor systems, producing an evolving soundscape susceptible to loss, interference, and degradation. The resulting environment centers the distortion of information through a continuous process of energy conversion.

Andrew Sungtaek reminds us that Donald Judd was stationed with the US military occupation in Korea in 1946–47, just before the Korean War broke out. While Judd anecdotally acknowledged that his time in Korea was influential, the minimalist forms of his work were nonetheless taken up as strictly non-referential.

For Sungtaek, more than the question of influence, this occlusion opens onto an aesthetics of war and colonial occupation whose expression comes in amnesia, in always suppressing its own origins even while making art from war-surplus production lines. Paradoxically, it was in trying to render Judd’s austere minimalism legible to the growing Korean art market in recent years that his Korean influence gained tactical value towards prospective sales, and more explicit acknowledgement in turn.

My MFA thesis show opens April 16th at the New Wight Gallery on the UCLA campus. I'm very excited to share a new and highly experimental installation I have been developing. So many skills and ideas I've developed over the past 3 years have gone into this. It's still crunch time so I will be hopping offline shortly.

I hope to see you at the opening, or I would love to give you a tour of the show during gallery hours. It's not open long.

Thank you Heesoo for making this flier. @leymusoom

I will be showing alongside @bydanenakama @gene__studio @keegan_holden

It's been a journey 🔌💛 by @a.sungtaek

The 1973 fire at the Military Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, Missouri, destroyed an estimated 16–18 million official military personnel files and job records. Roughly 80% of Army files and 75% of Air Force files vanished, disproportionately affecting records from the U.S. occupation/division of Korea (1945–48), the occupation of Japan (1945–52), and the Korean War (1950–53). Arson was suspected but never proven; the official cause of the fire remains undetermined. by @a.sungtaek

My video will be playing on the UCLA campus in the New Wight gallery until Nov. 14th ☁️

My first video work, composed several weeks ago in a state of covid delirium.

Andrew Sungtaek, Recording Clouds, 2025
Single-channel video, black-and-white, sound, 2:55 min.

Recording Clouds montages aerial footage shot over northern Korea, recorded from U.S. and U.N. military aircraft. The archival material has been altered to remove scenes of violence and identifying context, transforming the images into drifting, near-abstract views of landscape and cloud. I began compiling this footage in 2023, guided by the idea that these archives could potentially hold the only surviving images of my grandfather’s hometown.
