2016 —> 2026 as a life update

Ten years ago, I taught a music theory class to dancers at the University of Illinois during MMDG’s annual teaching residency there. I got so excited about subdividing the bars of a minuet I hopped up onto the barre to write out the dancers’ suggestions.

This week, I started my newest teaching role as a Lecturer in Contemporary Dance Technique & Repertory at UW Madison. Delight and fulfillment from teaching has sustained me over the last decade, smoothing out the bumpy highs and lows of performing and art making. I’m grateful to keep doing it at this historic program.

BTW, I live in Madison now! Come visit, or say hi if you’re nearby. by @a_loux

We are still on a high from last’s night opening!

What a treat to have Tere O’Connor back in our theater with this fabulous program. We can’t wait for the rest of the run.

Come see this show with your loved ones this holiday season. You won’t regret it!

Tere O’Connor returns to Live Arts in two weeks with the world premiere of “The Lace!”

A first look at O’Connor’s new dance featuring Tim Bendernagel, Liony Garcia, Gabriel Bruno Eng Gonzalez, Aaron Loux and veteran company members Heather Olson and Natalie Green.

O’Connor’s commitment to composition as an artifact of thought—and an instrument of queer freedom—will be on full display in the meticulously etched movement constructions, performed by the six outstanding dance artists featured in “The Lace.”

“San Quentin,” set to Henry Cowell’s “Set of Two Movements,” takes inspiration from the composer’s steadfast commitment to making and teaching music while incarcerated. Cowell was arrested in 1936 on a morals charge under California’s then anti-sodomy laws, spending four years in San Quentin prison. During that time, Cowell conducted the prison orchestra, gave lessons to fellow inmates and his composition students John Cage and Lou Harrison, and composed many new works. The dance explores the tension between resistance and acclimation, seeking to discover how to maintain an expressive life in the most difficult situations.

“San Quentin” was originally commissioned in 2024 by Marymount Manhattan College and is being reimagined for this performance for a cast of ten extraordinary dancers and the inimitable George Lykogiannis on piano. by @a_loux

Sound Companion: Dances to Henry Cowell
Nov 23. 3:30p & 5:30p

This show celebrates the Cowell’s radical early works for solo piano through the choreography of Aaron Loux and Karlie Budge and the dynamic musicianship of George Lykogiannis.
Aaron Loux is a dance artist, choreographer, educator, and critic working at the intersection of concert dance, music, and historical research to explore queer relationality and enliven artistic lineages through choreographic intervention.
Karlie Budge is a dancer, stager, and choreographer who is currently a member of the Mark Morris Dance Group. Her choreography focuses on human, natural, and spiritual relationships with an emphasis on musicality.

The brilliant filmmaker and choreographer @_motionxpictures (Sarah Friedland) - whom I feel lucky to call a dear friend - has made a profoundly moving film that is now playing in theaters.

@familiartouch sensitively and humanely uncovers the multiple facets of self that persist and emerge during an experience of memory loss. I can’t put into words how much I love this film; I’d much rather you saw it for yourself!

New Yorkers, it’s playing at Film Forum for the next two weeks. Go!

Non-New Yorkers, it’s opening soon all over. Go!

1. The thrill of freshly lettered marquee.
2. A funny and heartfelt conversation between Sarah, her star Kathleen Chalfant, and the actor John Turturro, whose irrepressible admiration of the film was delightful to witness.
3. Movie theater magic at @filmforumnyc
4. Don’t just take my word for it! by @a_loux

“What If We’re Beautiful” by Daniel Thomas Davis and Hub New Music is available to stream on June 27th. Do yourself a huge favor and support queer art this Pride month by preordering a copy! Link in bio.

Aaron and I had the incredible privilege to create a film with @hubnewmusic and @fourtenmedia to celebrate this album release. We are so pleased with the final result and hope you love it too.

As the year ends, I’m feeling grateful for the opportunities I had to create. I made three new dances in 2024. Each pushed me in a new direction.

San Quentin

Choreography: Aaron Loux
Music: Henry Cowell, Set of Two Movements
Piano: @georgelyko
Lighting: @skscheyenne
Costumes: @paillettebylc
Dancers: Eden Araten, Morgan Baker, Brooke Barnes, Kjerstin Bartell, Miranda Blumanstock, Ciara Cardinal, Anne Cassidy, Sydney Cullen, Summer Hatcher, Kirsten Montes, Christina Naslund, Emily Pilz, Reese Pohle, Kelly Sawyer, Carly Shraga, Sadie Wheeless, Beth Windes

Henry Cowell wrote the second movement of this piece in San Quentin prison, where he was incarcerated from 1936-1940 under California’s anti-sodomy laws. The piece is one among many Cowell wrote while imprisoned there.

Taking Cowell’s painful yet productive years of incarceration as a starting point, this ensemble work examines the tensions I imagine him having felt in his attempt to live an expressive life in confinement.

Thank you to Betsy Cooper and the @mmcdancedept for the opportunity to create this work, George Lykogiannis for playing this challenging score with passion and clarity, Lauren Carmen and Cheyenne Sykes for building the haunting visual design of this world, and to the extraordinary cast of MMC dancers who brought it to life.
