Two years of client work, and one of my favourite projects wasn't for a client at all.
Last year, our all-female crew, Magic Suitcase, competed in the 48 Hour Film Festival — where you write, shoot, and edit an entire short film in 48 hours, no exceptions.
We came 2nd in our Auckland heat, picked up multiple award nominations, and I was nominated for Best Editing at the Auckland finals.
It's a different kind of pressure to client work — no brief, no client sign-off, just a team and a strict deadline — and honestly one of the best reminders of why I love what I do.
Thanks to Co-Writer/Directors Michele Powles & Anna Rose Duckworth, incredible DOP Nina Wells, and the whole dedicated cast and crew for a fun weekend of chaos and collaboration making this film: https://pinata.co.nz/project/48hr-film-festival.

My week on @nzcine wouldn't be complete without giving massive props to one of my favourite cinematographers; Nina Wells @nina__wells

Nina is the ultimate collaborator. The ultimate "yes, and." The ultimate believer in bringing your vision to life together.

I've worked with her multiple times and she consistently achieves well above what our budgets should allow, but beyond that, she's just an exceptional creative partner. She always presents options, explains the technical reasoning, and tells me the creative impact; what effect it will actually have on the image, the mood, the story. So we can make informed decisions together.

Nina is incredibly versatile, browse her website (ninawells.com) and you'll see an impressive range of looks, worlds, and tones. Our own projects together have spanned some pretty different visual territory, which is a testament to how much she brings to each collaboration.

As a developing director I've found her generosity in prep hugely beneficial. She comes wanting to fully understand what I'm trying to achieve and deeply invested in finding the visual language that will best serve the story.

And, just as importantly, she knows when to say no. When something isn't achievable, she'll say so, which means we have to think creatively and move laterally to get what we need.

Great cinematographer, great human, great person to be in the trenches with. Fun fact, we've both had our time expressing on set, iykyk 😊

I'm super excited to see her upcoming work on SPP's Settling!

Firstly, huge love to @ellenpickering for the week of posts, really interesting to see all the variation in different countries systems. 🙌

Hi, I'm Anna Rose Duckworth. I’m a Capricorn Taurus Taurus with many hats (some now hung up). Current: mother, writer, director, script supervisor, and creative director of @dayone_nz. Former hats include PA, travel and accomm, locations manager and producer.

But let's start in 2013, with my very first time directing a music video.

Sony called. Could we concept and shoot a music video in 5 days for the winner of X Factor NZ? Sure, why not.

I pitched a simple (read: not that simple) performance video for Jackie Thomas. She'd walk an unbroken path for the entire song, one take. The floor plan was huge. 250 bare bulbs rigged across the whole space at different heights creating tunnels of bulbs, clusters, and spaced out singles. Every light individually programmed, synced to changing pacing and movement in time with specific moments in the music.

Simple right? Easy right? Low budget? No problem. A ha… ha ha…

Day of shoot: rigging with the cherry picker was way too slow. The grand floor plan had to shrink to a quarter of the size. We were suddenly shooting close to the studio walls. The light programming? Not working. My cinematographer Eoin O’Liddigh and I sat on a couch outside the AFS studio looking at each other like... this is cooked.

We needed to leave with a music video, so we had to make it work. The crew threw offers at us, we figured out what we could actually pull off with what we had, chalked a smaller figure-8 on the floor, and ran with it. Jackie arrived, we showed her the path to walk and she absolutely delivered on performance.

Is it what I originally conceived? No. Is it a solid music video? Actually, yeah. It’s simple yet effective performance video. It got over 250k views. Can’t be mad. And the song still slaps to this day.

The lesson I took from it (after licking my wounds): filmmaking is problem solving. Also, maybe make sure you have the budget and gear to actually achieve what you're planning. by @aaannarose
