Incredible energy, sharper newsroom instincts and a reminder of why community in this industry matters.

Board members @byesharay and @rekha_shan represented SAJA at the recently concluded #AAJA26 in lovely Minneapolis — and hosted a mixer along with the #AAJA chapter heads of New York (@aajanewyork), New England (@aajanewengland), Philadelphia (@aajaphilly) and Washington, D.C. (@aaja_dc), and News Nerds.

It was conversations, community-building and pizza galore. Stay tuned for many such collaborations in the future.

D.C. chapter members showed up big time at #AAJA26 in Minneapolis! We moderated and attended panels, produced the gala that featured the iconic @anncurry, led a record-breaking group run, received numerous awards, organized mixers with our friends from the Northeast chapters, attended sessions and asked insightful questions, sang Prince songs at karaoke, signed our books at the pop-up book store, explored the Twin Cities and ate delicious Laotian, Somalian, and Indigenous cuisines, made countless connections, and inspired each other with our stories. Thank you to all who attended and we hope to see even more members in the San Francisco Bay Area next year for #AAJA27!

A powerful and moving tour of @smithsonianapa’s “How Can You Forget Me” exhibition at the @amhistorymuseum. A big thank you to Sam Vong, the exhibit’s curator, who guided us through the fascinating and often overlooked history of a trailblazing Filipino community in California from the 1910s to the 1970s as displayed through several steamer trunks. And thanks to our members who attended this meaningful event during AAPI Heritage Month! @aajaofficial taken in National Museum of American History by @aaja_dc

This AAPI month, our @aaja_dc crew got together for a traditional Hawaiian fabric (Kapa) making workshop with @smithsonian ✨

Kapa is the traditional barkcloth of Hawaiʻi, made from the wauke (paper mulberry) plant, carried to the islands by Polynesian voyagers over 1,000 years ago. We stripped branches, pounded bark with wooden mallets, for a handmade piece of history.

We had fun making something really special with our own hands, and learning a craft that’s been passed down for centuries.

Most importantly, doing this activity surrounded by our community made it even more special.

Happy AAPI month to all who celebrate.

Journalism in 2026 doesn’t clock out. It’s urgent, relentless, and often emotionally heavy.

From covering immigration enforcement and community trauma to reporting in conflict zones and navigating instability in our own newsrooms—the pressure is real. So how do we keep doing meaningful work without burning out?

Join AAJA-DC + AMEJA for a candid virtual panel: Holding the Line: Resilience, Burnout, and Boundaries

This conversation goes beyond surface-level self-care. We’ll dig into the culture of overwork in journalism, the cumulative impact of trauma exposure, and how industry instability affects journalists—especially journalists of color.

🗓 Friday, April 24, 2026
⏰ 12:00 PM ET
📍 Virtual

🎤 Featuring:
Dr. Siddharth Shah — sharing field-tested tools to process trauma and manage stress in high-intensity environments
Mohammed R. Mhawish — journalist reporting on conflict and its long-term human impact
Chris Casquejo — on navigating uncertainty and change in today’s media landscape

🎙 Moderated by:
Mahdis Keshavarz — Founder, The Make Agency | C0-Founder AMEJA

You’ll walk away with practical strategies to set boundaries, sustain your career, and protect your mental health in an always-on industry.
