What happens when we venture beyond the world we know? 🌏

Sometimes the greatest journeys don’t just take us somewhere new. They change how we see other cultures…and how we see ourselves.

That’s the spirit behind East Meets West…and the remarkable journeys we’ve been privileged to retrace with National Geographic photographer Michael Yamashita @yamashitaphoto

Watch to the end…and tell us:
What journey changed the way you see the world?

And hope you’ll join our journey @eastmeetswestfilm

Travel… Trade… Trust…

Through the eyes of Nat Geo's Michael Yamashita , our East Meets West docuseries has been retracing the journeys that linked civilizations across land & sea.
These were more than trade routes. They were routes of understanding.

@farlandchang : “In revisiting these epic Silk Road routes, I'm struck by how relevant these stories remain today:

connection, not conquest
exchange, not isolation
common ground across cultures

Over the coming months, I’ll be sharing reflections from places we revisited while following in the footsteps of Marco Polo and Zheng He.

Because behind every remarkable destination lies a bigger story.
Not just about the past…
…but about the choices we face today.”

Travel… Trade… Trust.

The ancient routes that once connected East&West may still offer timeless lessons for building greater understanding, cooperation & peace.

Incredible energy, sharper newsroom instincts and a reminder of why community in this industry matters.

Board members @byesharay and @rekha_shan represented SAJA at the recently concluded #AAJA26 in lovely Minneapolis — and hosted a mixer along with the #AAJA chapter heads of New York (@aajanewyork), New England (@aajanewengland), Philadelphia (@aajaphilly) and Washington, D.C. (@aaja_dc), and News Nerds.

It was conversations, community-building and pizza galore. Stay tuned for many such collaborations in the future.

“What’s the difference between an influencer and an entertainment journalist?”

Someone asked this question during my Asian American Journalists Association (@aajaofficial) panel in Minneapolis. I was confused at first, but it made me realize how important it is to rethink what entertainment journalism means.

I’ve often been misunderstood as just another fangirl who wants to interview her favorite idols. I actually started writing about K-pop because I could observe and archive what moves people, especially fans. Politics tells us how societies are governed, but entertainment shows what people dream about, their desires and fears, and even how they fall in love.

It’s hard to explain why a certain song became a hit or why a film like K-pop Demon Hunters suddenly resonates with millions in the West. I think entertainment journalism explains why something connects with people rather than simply reporting what’s trending.

I was honored to speak at AAJA’s national journalism convention alongside culture critic Rebecca Sun(@therebeccasun), veteran editor Hanh Nguyen(@hanhonymous), and TV Guide’s Kat Moon(@katxmoon). I’m grateful to AAJA for giving me this opportunity.
