What is luxury in a world facing ecological pressure and multiple crises?

In INTER-FACE:ing LuxuryLogico, Taiwanese artist collective @luxurylogico — Keng-Hao Chang, Geng-Hwa Chang, Kun-Ying Lin and Yi Chen — explores this question through kinetic installations and immersive VR experiences. Bringing art, technology and ecology into dialogue with AaltoSiilo’s industrial heritage, the exhibition invites us to rethink how we relate to the world around us.

From industrial memory and marine debris to speculative futures beyond human-centred perspectives, the works challenge us to look beyond material consumption and consider what truly matters: time, nature, human connection, ecological symbiosis and freedom.

The Taiwan–Finland encounter also features Finnish artist and musician @launaulaunau Lau Nau (Laura Naukkarinen) in collaboration with the Sontag Shogun musical ensamble @sontagshogun and Oulu-based @taikaboxdance , whose live performance responds to the exhibition.

Del 31 de octubre al 2 de noviembre, Oulu acogerá una selección de documentales de la Muestra Internacional de Cine “Canarias Documental”.
Durante tres tardes podremos descubrir distintas miradas y realidades a través del cine documental. Después de las proyecciones habrá espacio para conversar y, en algunas sesiones, contaremos con la participación de directores e invitados.

From 15 to 25 October, AaltoSiilo hosts 'INTER-FACE:ing LuxuryLogico', an exhibition bringing the work of Taiwanese artist collective @luxurylogico into dialogue with AaltoSiilo’s distinctive architectural, industrial and ecological context.

Presented as part of the @oulu2026official programme and supported by @moc_taiwan , the admission free exhibition features three kinetic installations and three immersive VR works exploring our relationship with technology, nature and a world shaped by multiple crises.

At AaltoSiilo, the former industrial silo designed by Alvar Aalto becomes an active interface between past and present, technology and environment, and Finnish and Taiwanese perspectives. The exhibition asks what luxury might mean beyond material consumption — and invites us to consider time, nature, human connection, ecological symbiosis and freedom as forms of value.

The Finland–Taiwan dialogue continues through artistic collaboration with Finnish artist and musician Lau Nau and Oulu-based TaikaBox.

AaltoSiilo has been even more active than normal this September. In just a few weeks, the former industrial landmark became an exhibition space, a cinema, a stage, a meeting place and a forum for international exchange.

The month brought 'Women on Waves', Elina Brotherus’s exhibition inspired by Alvar Aalto’s architecture, and the EUmies Awards 2026 Exhibition showcasing the winners of the 2026 prize for architecture; Marina Abramović’s tribute to the Baltic with 'Skin, Salt and Tears' celebrated a long-time close collaboration between the artist, Adam Lowe and the team at Factum Arte. The Silo hosted 'Another Gaze', an international seminar on architecture; 'A Day in Meri-Toppila', celebrating the area’s history and architectural heritage; and the 'Provenance Projected' Symposium, exploring adaptive reuse and architectural transformation.

European ambassadors, EU politicians and other international guests also visited, helping to further bring the legacy project of Oulu2026 to international attention.

For a building that spent decades storing woodchips and was almost demolished, the AaltoSiilo is now busy storing something else: encounters, ideas, images and memories. It is becoming one of the most dynamic cultural centres on the edge of the Arctic Circle.

Emanuele Rigamonti (cellist) and Loredana Policelli (piano), with live electronics provided by Mirko Macina, built a programme around 20th-century authors like Ravel, De Falla, Bartok, Fazil Say and Paert, in dialogue with a second part of Mediterranean-style improvisations on contemporary movie and theatre soundtracks.⁠

Risteyskohdissa-dokumentti nähdään perjantaina 2.10. osana Tampereen arkkitehtuuri- ja designviikon @tadweek ACT-seminaaria. Seminaarin iltapäiväohjelmassa kuullaan myös AaltoSiilo ry:n projektipäällikön Valentino Tignanellin keynote-puheenvuoro.

Ohjaaja Anna Niemelän Risteyskohdissa on dokumentti muistoista ja ihmisistä, joiden polut ovat risteytyneet ainutlaatuisella tavalla Oulussa sijaitsevan AaltoSiilon kanssa. Dokumentti seuraa rapistuneen varastorakennuksen muuntumista kulttuurin, taiteen ja kohtaamisten tilaksi ja pohtii samalla, mitä olemassa olevien rakennusten säilyttäminen kertoo suhteestamme ympäristöön, identiteettiin ja tulevaisuuteen.

Crossroads documentary will be screened on Friday, 2 October, as part of the ACT seminar at Tampere Architecture and Design Week @tadweek . The afternoon programme will also feature a keynote by Valentino Tignanelli, Project Manager at AaltoSiilo ry.

Directed by Anna Niemelä, Crossroads is a documentary about memories and people whose paths have intersected in a unique way with AaltoSiilo in Oulu. The documentary follows the transformation of a decaying storage building into a space for culture, art and encounters, while reflecting on what preserving existing buildings reveals about our relationship with the environment, identity and the future.

Julien Tassin tunnetaan bluesista, rockista, jazzista, folkista ja vapaasta improvisaatiosta ammentavasta omaleimaisesta tyylistään. Oululaisen Heikki Ruokankaan musiikissa melodisuus ja atonaalinen ilmaisu kohtaavat tavalla, joka vie kuulijan tutun ja tuntemattoman rajalle.

On Saturday 29 August, the event “A Day in Meri Toppila” brought together local and international architecture voices at AaltoSiilo (@aaltosiilo) as part of Aalto Week.

The afternoon’s international programme featured Kati Laitinen, Head of the European Commission Representation in Finland. As part of the session, Ivan Blasi (@ibmbcn), Director of the EUmies Awards at Fundació Mies van der Rohe (@fundaciomies), presented the exhibition and discussed the selection process behind the 2026 edition, highlighting the key architectural debates and challenges addressed by this year’s awarded and finalist projects.

Following the exhibition and events at AaltoSiilo in Oulu, the showcase now moves to another Alvar Aalto landmark: the Lappia House in Rovaniemi, on view from 7 to 30 September.
