Almost ten years ago, I brought home a little yellow lab puppy named Ivar, after Ivar’s Fish & Chips at the ferry landing to Whidbey Island.

The girls stayed up waiting for him and slept with him on the living room floor that first night.

From then on, he was part of everything.

He grew up alongside Ellie, Gigi and Rosie and was there for nearly every chapter of our family’s last ten years.

In January at only nine, he was still charging after chukar with me. Shortly after, we learned he had cancer, and a few months later, he was gone.

Thank you to Amber Acker for always taking such good care of our dogs, and Carrie Hume at WestVet in Boise for helping give us a few more special months with our boy.🙏

With a new puppy coming home this weekend, I dug up all these old memories because I wanted to make this video for us—to watch over and over and remember our sweet boy.

We miss you, buddy.❤️

I’ll start by saying it’s not all great. But a look back at the last 3 years (we moved to Idaho in July of 2020) and it’s been 3 years of so much growth for our family.

My friend @carriebobb recently posted about her move from California to Nashville and it resonated, she said:

“It sounds lovely, but in reality it was scary and hard. It takes a huge leap of faith to make a big move. In the moment, we didn’t see we were being carried. We believed we were doing the right thing, but we really didn’t know.”

I walked away from a career of 17 years to start over in a new 100% commission based business in which I had no experience (selling homes and leasing shopping centers is very different). My eye twitched for 3 straight weeks at one point. 🤣 The amazing team I worked with for all of those years I haven’t seen since the day the Newmark office closed early March 2020. Kids thought we were leaving for a few months and have never been back (we are finally returning to visit La Jolla next week which will be so much fun). We left without saying goodby to countless amazing friends whom we feel we somehow let down. Erika left her job of 10 years at La Jolla Pres without any fanfare, after I rented our house for a month to make a few bucks and said we had to pack and move in 10 days. I think that coincided with her 40th birthday. It was a lot… 😳

A year later, I remember when we found a church here that was saying goodbye to a staff member in Erikas same position and we both realized it was the goodbye she (and we) never had. Tears. So many things abruptly changed and we just went but never saying goodby to the life we built was the hardest.

In Idaho we quickly found a community of friends doing in many cases the exact same thing as us and there was huge comfort in that. Our family had to grow in ways that I think will help each of us for years to come. I dove into work and found success and a new career I love. Girls have thrived. Erika just yesterday put on a huge wedding that was a fabulous success.

Started this post a while ago and just finishing it now… my Rosie is at sleep away camp and I miss my little adventure buddy that goes with the flow and is up for all (*most) of my fishing and hunting plans.

Peak father-daughter bonding with Ellie on the Proctor Mountain Loop trail yesterday.

Wildflowers are just starting, Benny found every creek possible and the view towards Baldy was 👌⛰️🌞

One of my favorite local hikes and a big reason why I named Proctor Mountain Group after this iconic spot.

We finished it off at Grumpys… then Lefty’s. Ellie gives the burger nod to Grumpys - I prefer the deck at Lefty’s. Which is your fav?

Spring in the turkey woods with Rosie has become an annual tradition. This year Gigi joined us and got her first turkey. Paps came along to cheer us all on. Benji, Zoe and Raven came as well as a bunch of good buddies and their kids - was a great time.

January in Idaho over the last few years…

This month captures a sense of stillness, endurance, and starting over that is both comforting and carries the weight of the years passing and the pressure of a clean slate.

Maybe that’s why this favorite Hemingway line always lands harder this time of year:

“The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places.”

2016… Twas a good year for our little family.

I miss the girls at this age. They were so cute and gave lots of hugs and kisses to their Daddy.

@erikalelandhill and I hiked Mount Whitney. She beat me to the top. We rented an RV and drove to Yosemite and had the best time exploring with the girls.

Preschool, kindergarten for Ellie at Bird Rock Elementary, babysitters sending us photos of the girls with their snowballs boobs 🤣🤣 lots of diapers… chaos!!

I’m sure I was exhausted and overwhelmed, but looking back I miss every minute. by @aaronhillbilly

A little video journal from deep in the Idaho backcountry with my brother @goatproidaho and 4 of his pack goats.

High in a scree bowl over 10,000 feet with nasty weather rolling through we were cleaning this deer late at night by the fire, and I was completely shot, with a solid pack back to camp still ahead of us. My brother, though — he was just hitting his stride.

It took me back to when we were kids, out here in these same mountains, shooting our first deer together nearly 40 years ago.

In the words of Jocko Willink:
“There is no growth in the comfort zone.”

That dude @jockowillink would love to hang out with my brother… pure grit.
