Every living composer has a unique relationship with the work of the past. Artistic kinship, common fascinations, shared sonic concerns—these strands shine brightest when illuminated by thoughtful programming. Wise Music Classical is pleased to present a selection of pairings between the music of Aaron Jay Kernis ( @aaronkernis ) and masterworks of the classical tradition, curated and annotated by Kernis himself. With a Pulitzer, GRAMMY, Yale Professorship, and countless other distinguished honors to his name, Aaron has been at the forefront of American music for over three decades. Read more in our story.

I’m so thrilled to be nearly finished writing Prayers for the Living, a big new solo piano piece in six movements for the brilliant Anne-Marie McDermott and Bravo Vail! The piece arises out of the complex of emotions in this moment- so much intensity of feeling in every direction. I can’t wait to get to the double bar, and to work with Annie toward its premiere next July. by @aaronkernis

So much to look forward to in 2026! Tracie and I continuing this newest iteration of our lives together- watching my brilliant children flourish and grow, our Cat-Muse Leo continuing his reign…
Musically, the premiere of my 2nd Piano Concerto with Jean-Yves Thibaudet in Rochester in just a few weeks, and in July , a new piano piece, Prayers for the Living, for the brilliant Anne-Marie McDermott in Vail. So excited for both! Safe and happy New Year’s wishes to all!!! by @aaronkernis

applications for YSM fall'26 are now open!

The composition area will be having several virtual open houses via zoom for anyone who has questions about the program or degrees (MM, MMA, DMA). All degrees are full tuition and a stipend. Tell your friends! Tell you students!

I am biased, but I think it's a pretty great place to write some music and learn some things 🐝🦄🐙 taken in Yale School of Music by @aaronkernis

We had splendid recording sessions of my 4th String Quartet (“Oasis”) with ( and written for) the Borromeo Quartet in Boston this week, leading to a future disc release and the work’s Boston premiere at Jordan Hall on Nov. 25. Everyone played magnificently, and it was helmed by the steady hand of engineer Eric Engler. A gazillion thanks to all! by @aaronkernis
