POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Every living composer has a unique relationship with the work of the past. Artistic kinship, common fascinations, shared sonic concerns—these strands shine brightest when illuminated by thoughtful programming. Wise Music Classical is pleased to present a selection of pairings between the music of Aaron Jay Kernis ( @aaronkernis ) and masterworks of the classical tradition, curated and annotated by Kernis himself. With a Pulitzer, GRAMMY, Yale Professorship, and countless other distinguished honors to his name, Aaron has been at the forefront of American music for over three decades. Read more in our story.

AMAZING TIME AT THE 2026 NORFOLK NEW MUSIC WORKSHOP!! @norfolk.yale 💙

It was an absolutely incredible nine days surrounded by inspiring musicians, composers, faculty, and friends. It was truly an honor to be part of the 2026 Norfolk New Music Workshop, one of the oldest chamber music festivals in US.

I’m leaving with so much gratitude including the premiere of my piece, “What Flickered Between the Reveries?”, but also all the conversations, ideas, experiences, and perspectives that have expanded my musical world.

I’m deeply grateful to the incredible faculty and guest composers—Martin, Aaron, Chris, David, and Katherine. Thank you for sharing your insight and musical perspectives so generously. I learned so much from each of you, and I’m truly grateful for all the inspiring conversations.

A huge thank you to the incredible conductor Lisa and performers, Ciara, Julian, Amy, George, Matthew, and Jieun for bringing my piece to life with such an amazing artistry, dedication, and care.

Also it was a joy to hear everyone’s beautiful performances throughout the week, and congratulations to all of the fellow composers on your wonderful premieres!

Beyond the music, I’m so delighted for the friendships, laughter, and time spent making music surrounded by such beautiful nature. It was truly a place to recharge too.

Thank you again to all the faculty, guest artists, performers, composers, and staff - Mio @mio_yamauchi and Garrett @garrett_cooksey , who made this experience so special. I already miss everyone, and I can’t wait until our paths cross again. :)

Thank you Norfolk!!!!! 🎶 @norfolk.yale

It was an honor to participate in the 2026 Norfolk New Music Workshop, a program that is part of one of oldest chamber music festivals in the US. My time at Norfolk was highly enriching, collaborative, and fruitful, thanks to the brilliant faculty, musicians, and peers I got to live and work alongside.

The grounds of the estate hold a breathtaking balance between stillness and natural vitality which was thought-provoking and inspiring in many ways.

I learned so much in the process of rehearsing/ workshopping and the premiere of my piece “Recall”-which was littered with a number of compositional experiments-and am so grateful to the NMW ensemble for their openness, dedication, and musicianship @vi_ciara_ously

Thank you to everyone who came out over these past three nights and filled this incredible space with your deep listening and open hearts. It felt like magic to me, and I am truly grateful to each and every one of you. 🙏☠️🎹🇺🇸💪🎶🥂

All my love and thanks to @andrewousley, @deathofclassical, and @historicgreenwood for giving me this extraordinary space to share my heart through music. ♥️

America/Beautiful will continue, and I hope you’ll help me spread the word and amplify this project, which now feels less like a project and more like a mission.

Tomorrow brings a very different concert, featuring many more variations from America/Beautiful, with several of the composers joining me at Chelsea Music Festival in NYC. @cmf_nyc

Happy Father’s Day today. ❤️

More soon…

Photo 11: with the big-hearted and gifted @composercoleman, who capped off my residency by singing the original song itself. 🎶

Some more images from our incredible Season Finale concert on May 31! It was so special to perform an electrifying program with members of the @nyphilharmonic featuring new American music with the composers in attendance. Even more special was the wonderful crowd who came out to experience it!

With AI, technology and screens occupying so much of our consciousness, we are more committed than ever to preserving live music and human connection through the arts. We are so inspired by the community or artists and music lovers that we have built and got to nourish weekly this past season, and can’t wait to continue in the fall. ❤️
