Creative, collaborator, and the visionary behind the lens. 🎞️
Today, we’re shining a well-deserved spotlight on Kaila Perkins (@klixbykailaphotography ), a vital team member and contributor here at a𝕒𝓇𝓣𝒽ⓔ𝐑ⓐᵖy. Kaila has been a creator her entire life, moving through different artistic mediums before finding her ultimate home in photography.
The turning point? 2022, when a simple session shooting friends turned into the professional spark she needed to launch her career. Now, she’s capturing love stories, weddings, and raw moments all over the Metro Detroit area.
We are so incredibly lucky to have her creative energy in our corner. Head over to the link in our bio to read our full feature on Kaila’s journey, her evolution as an artist, and what inspires her work. ✨

Architecture meets the soul. 🏛️✨

For this round of aartherapy, we are incredibly proud to feature Darrell J. Dinges. A photographer, architect, and designer, Darrell brings a structural depth to his work that is truly one-of-a-kind.

Introduced to architecture by his mother as a child, Darrell has spent a lifetime understanding how things are built—and now, he’s applying that eye to the “architecture of the self.” His focus on self-portraiture gets to the core of what we do here: helping artists see themselves in their own work and taking that connection to the next level.

You can currently catch Darrell’s work on display at @hatcharthamtramck , @thevoyeurbordello , and @swordsintoplowshares_det .

Read the full story of how a “failed” 2013 Instagram project became the catalyst for some of the most compelling photography in Detroit today. Link in bio! 🔗

Ordinary spaces become stages for feeling. ✨

For our latest a𝕒𝓇𝓣𝒽ⓔ𝐑ⓐᵖy feature, we’re diving into the lens of Jurgita Atanaskovski ( @soulfullens__ ). A Lithuanian-born, Detroit-based visual storyteller, Jurgita captures the “quiet poetry” of everyday life with a sensitivity that is hard to teach.

By day, she works as a Memory Care Director—a role that deeply informs her ability to capture honest, unspoken emotions at a soul level. Whether she’s exploring Detroit’s streets or dreaming of the organic geometries of Gaudí’s Barcelona, her work is a masterclass in minimalism and mood.

Check out the full interview on our blog to see how she transforms simple moments into compelling visual narratives. 📸

We’re all scrolling. But at what cost to the work? 📱📉

In the second phase of aartherapy, we’re digging into the “Noise.” We’ve talked about the joy of making, but now we’re getting honest about the pressure to perform.

We asked 5 Detroit artists: How does social media impact the way you create and share your art? The answers range from the freedom of digital community to the paralyzing “comparison trap.” If we want to use art as a grounding tool, we have to talk about the thing that pulls us away from being grounded the most.

This isn’t just for the artists behind the lens. Do you find yourself creating things just to “post” them, or does the digital world actually inspire your process? Let’s get honest in the comments. 👇 #aartherapy #detroitart #socialmediadetox #creativeanxiety #doomscrolling by @aartherapy_

The powerhouse behind the scenes, Jackie Edwards. ✨

If you know the Detroit photography community, you know Jackie. A retired “serious hobbyist” with a professional’s eye and a mentor’s heart, she has been a major supporter of local creatives for years. 📸🎨

From her early days making art as a child to her current work across photography and painting, Jackie’s life is a testament to staying curious. Most recently, she was instrumental in coordinating the very first aartherapy workshop at the Pope Francis Center right here in Detroit. We truly couldn’t have done it without her coordination and vision.

Jackie reminds us that art isn’t just about what you produce—it’s about the community you build along the way. 🏙️🙌

Community is everything. Who is someone in your life that supports your creative journey? Let’s give them their flowers in the comments. 👇

Everyone sees the final piece, but the magic is usually hidden in the middle. 🎨✨

For the latest aartherapy session, I sat down with 6 incredible artists to ask one question: What is your favorite part of the artistic process? From the first spark of an idea to the final finishing touch, the answers were as diverse as the work they create.

It’s a reminder that there is no “right” way to create—only your way.

What about you? What part of the process makes you feel most alive? Let’s talk in the comments. 👇

“Art allows you to explore your own imagination, which helps you find out who you truly are.” 🎞️✨

We’re going behind the scenes with the talented Amanda J. Cain ( @amandajcain ). Beyond her work with the Detroit Pistons, Amanda is a deep believer in the “slow craft”—the research and dedication it takes to truly master an art form.

She joined aartherapy to help others find their way, focusing on how art helps us let go of the things that clutter our mental health. For Amanda, imagination isn’t just for fun; it’s the path to finding out who you are and finding peace.

Check out the full feature on our site (link in bio).

The world is full of noise. Inspiration is how we tune it out.

We’re continuing our deep dive into the a𝕒𝓇𝓣𝒽ⓔ𝐑ⓐᵖy collective. For this second group feature, we’re looking at 7 of our artists through a different lens.

We asked them: What inspires you?

In a world that demands our constant attention, finding a spark isn’t just a creative choice—it’s an act of grounding. Whether it’s the grit of the city or the silence of a morning, these 7 creators share what keeps them anchored when everything else feels chaotic.

Healing isn’t linear, and neither is the “why” behind our work.

The Close: What’s the one thing that cuts through the noise for you? Tell us below. 👇

Legacy in Every Stroke. ✨

Miriam Uhura’s name is a gift from her father—a nod to his love for Star Trek and the legendary Nichelle Nichols. But when the world went quiet in 2020 and she faced the loss of the man who named her, Miriam didn’t just look to the stars. She looked to the canvas.

By day, she’s a professional piercer, navigating the precision of the needle. But all day, she is a painter, navigating the fluidity of grief and the vibrancy of the Black experience.

The Inspiration:
Drawing from the raw, dignifying lens of Deana Lawson and the rhythmic energy of Solange’s “Bad Girls,” Miriam’s work is a masterclass in visual storytelling. Her voice is one of the most vital in the Detroit art scene right now.

The Mission:
We sat down with Miriam to discuss how art serves as her survival strategy—a way to find peace when the “Doom Scroll” gets too loud.

Swipe through to see her and the soul of her work on Slide 4+6. ➡️

Join the Conversation:
Miriam started painting to cope with a profound loss. What is the one thing you do that makes the world feel quiet again? Let’s talk in the comments. 👇

The “Doom Scroll” is loud. This project is meant to be the louder.

For the past few months, I’ve been documenting a collective of 10 artists, asking them the same 20 questions about creativity, anxiety, and finding a sense of grounding. We are building a sanctuary—a community-driven exhibition focused on the act of breathing through art.

We’re starting with the most important question: How does making art make you feel? 😂🥰😴😇🤪😩🤬

From “happy” to “free” and everything in between, healing isn’t linear. This is just the beginning of the conversation.

How about you? Whether you’re a professional or just doodle to de-stress—how does creating something make you feel? Let’s talk in the comments. 👇

Reflective energy. 🧠✨

It’s more than just thinking—it’s the active, intentional practice of examining our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. By leaning into this practice, we can:

Increase self-awareness

Regulate emotions

Break negative thought cycles

Taking the time to look inward through journaling, meditation, or simple mindful self-check-ins helps us identify stress triggers and foster true resilience. It’s about creating a sense of calm in a chaotic world. 🌿

How do you find your calm? Let me know in the comments. ↓
