After 16 years in NYC, this one feels strangely personal.

Right after the New Talent issue was published, my mentor Virginia asked me how I felt about being named one of Art in America’s New Talents. I replied that it was an odd feeling, but that it also felt as though all those years of struggle in America were finally being seen, too. So I told her I was immensely happy. And then I laughed and said, “I’m in the midst of another visa application, so it helps with that, too!” —this is my art and my life in America.

Love to all my alien comrades with Extraordinary abilities, and to the allies who receive my embarrassing emails every three years for my immigration applications—and who have helped me multiple, multiple times, without hesitation, long before any of this… I won’t forget.

Thank you, @mr_tranquil_tranquil_waters for your insight and beautiful words. And thank you to my teams @francoisghebaly and @travesiacuatro for giving my art a window into the world. taken in Art In America by @aatchim

Joeun Kim Aatchim joins the 14th edition of the Taipei Biennial 2025 titled Whispers on the Horizon, which brings together 54 artists from 35 cities worldwide, curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath

Drawn during a quiet period the artist calls “Sinking Inward,” Aatchim gently departs from the labor intensive refinement of traditional Korean silk painting and treats silk organza as a draft, an intimate surface for daily meditative gestures.

For Minimally Invasive: Chapter 침 Crush, the silk is stitched at the corners to double layered glass sheets, an anchor just strong enough to keep the drawing afloat. The installation seals the silk between plexiglass, protecting it from humidity and preserving the daily drawings as if they were frozen in time and space.Aatchim explores memory and emotion through silk painting, writing, and audiovisual installation. She calls her method “Transparentism,” a drawing philosophy that unfolds like visual essays of woundedness, strength, and recovery.

100% of the profits from this edition (all unique!) go directly to @trianglenyc so that more artists can have the time, space, and freedom to make their work. 🤍

O, did I mention that you’ll also get to visit my studio and receive a signed postcard with my poem?

🤍

“I received the Triangle residency at a moment when I was between studios, following surgery and the isolation of the COVID lockdown. At Triangle, I found myself working passionately through the night again—experimenting with materials like silk and mineral pigments in my small laboratory setup, and having countless conversations through studio visits. I filled my studio so completely that visitors would walk in and ask, “How many years have you been here?” It was a genuinely fruitful period and a pivotal point in my growth as a professional artist. I support Triangle because I want more artists to have the chance to experience that same freedom, exchange, and momentum.”

The very first day we met, Francisco gave me a tiny copper tin with two enameled deer that looked just like him to me.

We met on a quiet winter evening at my apartment during the Covid lockdown, back when I didn’t have a studio. He came back the very next day to see my work again in natural light. I named him my “Day & Night visitor.”

I’ll miss you, my dear friend Francisco. I wish you could visit me again when the sun comes up.

Joeun Kim Aatchim reveals that the title of her first solo exhibition in Brazil, Miss Ceilingfan – ad nauseam, grew out of painting the same female face over and over, to the point of exhaustion. In conversation with A&D, the artist shares her creative process and discusses how she conceives the relationship between the paintings, her choice of materials, and their installation within the exhibition space. By transforming memories and emotional states into delicate, precious images that remain open to transformation, Aatchim offers a meditation on the passage of time and the endurance of lived experience.
