This weekend @tinachang_poet launches LION, published by W.W. Norton. I'm so touched that she was inspired to write a poem in response to my work. Thank you, Tina, for included me in this tender collection.

💙
"Lion mines personal and collective memory to explore safety and danger, visibility and invisibility as an Asian American woman.

Chang collaborates with multi-hyphenate women artists who create across multiple mediums: text, illustration, painting, video, sculpture. Artists include Haena Yoo @haenayooo, Hồng-Ân Trương @sadly_temporary, Astria Suparak @astriasuparak, and a collective whose work paid tribute to the life of Christina Yuna Lee, an Asian American woman who was murd3red during the height of anti-Asian h@te crimes, sparking cross-disciplinary dialogue on Asian American perspectives, surveillance, and the myth of the model minority.

Lion explores the closeness and distance between the racialized self the world views and the perceived self who endures and survives."

“Miss Ceilingfan – ad nauseam unfolds through a near-neurotic repetition, tracing an ongoing attempt to encounter a face that never fully arrives. Painted on sheer silk with gold and lapis lazuli, the works accumulate not resolution, but insistence. The figure appears, withdraws, and re-emerges — always incomplete. Miss Ceilingfan exists as a shifting presence, never fixed, alway becoming.” – Joeun Kim Aatchim

Visit Joeun Kim Aatchim’s (@aatchim) solo exhibition through tomorrow, August 1, at A&D.

Joeun Kim Aatchim reveals that the title of her first solo exhibition in Brazil, Miss Ceilingfan – ad nauseam, grew out of painting the same female face over and over, to the point of exhaustion. In conversation with A&D, the artist shares her creative process and discusses how she conceives the relationship between the paintings, her choice of materials, and their installation within the exhibition space. By transforming memories and emotional states into delicate, precious images that remain open to transformation, Aatchim offers a meditation on the passage of time and the endurance of lived experience.

Joeun Kim Aatchim’s (@aatchim) exhibition ‘Miss Ceilingfan - Ad Nauseam’ is now on view at @almeidaedale in São Paulo, through August 1.

The exhibition, Aatchim’s first in Brazil, brings together a new painting series with sculptures and objects. Aatchim created the paintings in the Miss Ceilingfan series, from which the exhibition takes its title, during an extended stay at her parents’ home in Seoul. Far from her studio in Brooklyn. Working at the family dining table, Aatchim turned to a character who has reappeared in her work for years. In the exhibition, as in her practice at large, Aatchim intertwines her art with a meticulous record of her coming of age, addressing themes of illness and healing, trauma and personal faith, family histories, and reconciliation.

Almeida & Dale presents Joeun Kim Aatchim's first exhibition in Brazil: Miss Ceilingfan - ad nauseam.
4 JUL-1 AGO
(Jul 4-Aug 1)
Exposição individual (Solo show)
FRADIQUE 1360

Born in Seoul and based in the United States, the artist creates work that intertwines everyday observation, memory, and fantasy. Alongside sculptures, objects, and a sound installation, the exhibition features 15 paintings from the "Miss Ceilingfan" series, a recurring character in Aatchim's work. The persistent repetition of the same face becomes both the theme and method of her work, in an exploration of the transformation of the image, the persistence of memory, and thetransitory nature of emotions.
