For the AA Visiting School, students will enact a method for embodied cartography to co-create prostheses for the body, a script, and choreography, culminating in a procession to map traces of Macau in Lisbonโ€™s Beleฬm waterfront district.

We will develop a wearable prototype that will consist of digital scanners, environmental and biometric sensors and recorders. The device will focus on embodied observations and movements, acting like a prosthetic that blurs bodily and environmental boundaries. by @aavs_lisbon

"This map orients north at the top and south at the bottom, with east on the left and west on the right. A detailed inscription along the border notes: โ€œFrom east to west, this province extends 1,320 li; from north to south, 550 li.โ€ The map depicts mountains, rivers, coastal features, and political divisions of Guangdong, including prefectures, sub-prefectures, counties, and military posts. It carefully distinguishes waterways, settlements, and administrative boundaries, with mountain ranges shown in green and river networks rendered in white waves. The map also situates Guangzhou, the provincial capital, in relation to surrounding towns and maritime routes, reflecting both geographical knowledge and administrative order of late 17th-century Qing governance." by @aavs_lisbon

The atlas consists of sixteen county maps and accompanying texts that describe the administrative landscape of the region, then comprising fifteen counties, one sub-prefecture, and fifteen guard posts.

Rendered in the distinctive perspective style of the time, the map vividly depicts mountains in bright green and blue, waterways with rippling waves, and finely detailed trees. Xiangshan County, represented as a walled city with two gates, shows its internal streets, government offices, residences, and mountain paths.

Macao appears southeast of the county, described as โ€œalso called Haojing, located 120 li beyond the Qianshan Pass.โ€ It is illustrated with multi-story buildings, surrounded by green hills, with a coastal fort to the east and sea walls and churches on the island itself. by @aavs_lisbon

๐—”๐— ๐—”๐—–๐—”๐—ข : A view of Macao printed by the Western artist Theodor de Bry in 1607. This engraving is one of the earliest Western printed depictions of the city, highlighting its already established streets, churches, and residences of the Portuguese settlement. It also portrays the daily activities of both Portuguese and Chinese inhabitants, offering a lively glimpse into the coexistence of cultures in the early colonial city.
