This is Kraftwerk Zschornewitz, a brown coal power plant built in Gräfenhainichen, Germany in 1916 that was once the largest operation in the world. It is open to the public for the 2026 OSTEN Festival from Sept 12 to 27.

On view here is a research and exhibition project about modern brightness, legacies of extractions, electrification, and ecologies of electrical lighting that I worked on last year with Valena Ammon @valenaammon , Sofia Boarino @sofiaboarino, Benton Ching @mrnotneb, Dominik Hoehn @dominikhoehn, Jorge Marinho @_mar_nho, Sofia Nercasseau @sofianercasseau, Alina Paias @linaias, generously supported by Regina Bittner and Philipp Sack at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.

This is Seaside Adaptations, an exhibition and joint studio review in Fall 2025 at the University of Miami, in collaboration with Pablo Sequero @psequero1, visiting critic at Syracuse University.

Part of a multiyear teaching collaboration between the University of Miami @u_soa and Syracuse University @syr_arch, this advanced studio class explored adapting the existing structures at the former Miami Seaquarium as public pools and research field stations in response to climate and ecological changes.

Tuesday, March 31, at 6:30 pm, architects Xiaoxi Chen, Lily Chishan Wong, and André Santos convene a gathering to present their work-in-progress multimedia project, Ta-Chim: Weighing a City’s Colonial Legacies. It traces the shifting political, material, and sensorial relationships between urban artifacts in Lisbon and Macao in search of postcolonial futures. “Ta-chim” translates to “balances” in Patuá, a critically endangered creole language developed in Macao, which was a Portuguese colony until 1999. The ongoing project was first exhibited at the 2025 Lisbon Architecture Triennale to ask: how does a city’s colonial legacies weigh against the seafaring rituals of homelands? Ta-Chim assembles archival images, films, performing bodies, and 3D scans to map circulations of post-colonial and diasporic matters and bodies.

Lily Chishan Wong’s performance “Rubberizing Histories” invited the audience to reflect on the unarchivable humans and more-than-humans that enabled the construction of botanical knowledge and cultivation of rubber-producing plants. From groups of indentured Indian workers to the “long-bearded Singhalese” who helped refine tapping Hevea brasiliensis, glimpses of them can be found on the margins of institutional archives. This is one of my favorite trips in 2025. For my research, I followed marine biologists Dr. Evan D’Alessandro and Dr. Dean Grubbs to the Shark Lab research station in the Bahamas and swam with many sharks and stingrays. 🦈

This is an announcement that I am still under 40 years old. 👽

But seriously, what an honor and surprise to share this 40 Under 40 award with 39 talented architects, friends, and colleagues from a wide spectrum of practices. Thanks Jack Murphy @yhprumkcaj for moderating “the world’s biggest round table” at the World Architecture Festival @worldarchfest and Dan Roche @danjoroche for writing an article @archpaper.

𝐓𝐀-𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐌: 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐲

Can technologies of sensing be reappropriated as offerings of care and resistance? By bringing technologies of cartography and navigation back to the ground and through our bodies, can colonial monuments “breathe” differently, to embody new, reciprocal relationships between humans, nature, and technology?
